Now if I cut the fenders that extremely won't I have zero dirt blockage to the engine bay???


Or is there a way to extend/adapt the inner fender????
 
It would actually even out the look of the truck if I cut that much. And eventually I am going to have to cut the fenders like that anyways...


SO my major questions are:

Is it street legal to drive WITHOUT inner fenders?

How stable/rigid would the front end be after I cut all that steel out??

Has anyone ever put walls up around the engine, to keep it clean(er) in this sort of situation???
 
I've been debating this since I got into the game! It still amazes me that someone hasn't come up with something brilliant!

Chris I'm totally into working on this with you if you are interested. I am certain it would be very easy to come up with a bolt on functional inner that provides the necessary space.

AND what I've always envisioned would provide a flat 'shelf' on either side of the engine bay, providing a much more useful and stable mounting position for pretty much anything.

If you are interested I've got the work space and can provide a few spares to experiment with, bring your welder and we'll throw something together.

I've got some other pretty cool ideas I'm aching to get to as well...
 
I've been wantng to rebuild my inners since I saw the inside of the engine bay of one of the early broncs....nice and flat inners that even hold tools AND a BEER!
 
My Jimmy's fenders have been trimmed pretty much as per that 'guideline' and I still have my inners...

The rear ain't no big deal, the front you just have to pay a little more attention if you want to retain the inners.

Nope, no welding involved. The inners bolt up normally...

I actually trimmed the front fenders while they were off the truck, and i did them from the inside so I wouldn't inadvertantly remove the attach points for the inners. I did make a template after the first one though so all four corners would look the same...

I did not even think you could keep the innners while cutting that much away....

Jay, I will take my measurements, and start cutting. But I will still come by and maybe we could the ol' vulcan mind meld, and make some flat top inners.

Complete with tool trays, and refridgerated cup holders.:haha: :haha:


But seriously I would like to throw something like that together miuns the refridgeration...
 
I cut mine past the mounting points at the rear part of the front fender. All I did was spot weld some brackets on the inside of the fender and moved the inner fender well back about 4-5 inches and re-attached them. Had to bent them starting at the firewall bolt out. Worked well and you can't tell they are bent without really looking hard.
 
I talked to the dude I saw in the parking of crappy tire a while back, and he made a cut on an angle, but not all the way through.

He left some steel at the top, and just bent it back, and laid a few tacks.

It looked good because that litle flare the fenders do, and kept the lines. I wouldn't think the mounting holes would line up on inner fender, but that could be dealt with.

Ma and Fireplug are gonna do some practise stuff, and see what comes out.. Could be something really good. I'll be sure to take a camera with me.
 
Hey fellas. Next week is my last week off work. I start again on the 27th of August... It's gonna blow big chunks, but I geuss I gotta got to work again...


But that isn't really what I wanted to tell you guys...

What I wanted people to know was that I am going to work on the truck during that last remaining week because I gotta get back into the swing of things.

Going to bed at 4:00am everynight, and waking up at 2-3:00pm the next day has kinda goofed my internal clock.


SO! Things I have done without taking pictures...

=>I hooked up my Brake/signal lights, and mounted the reverse lights.

=>I STARTED on making my fuel spout support housing. But the "wire guide/contact brass thinga-ma-jogger" (and yes that is the technical name, I looked it up, hahahaa:haha: ) was clogged and when I removed it, it fell down a crack in the porch, and then shortly afterwards that night I got popped in the face.

=>I hooked up a tach. And yeah, I know, I have an auto, but I like to be able watch what RPM the truck shifts at so I'll know if anything goes wonky.



So what I want to have completed by the end of the week is have the cab completely closed in, so that I can ditch that UBER heavy, and clumbsy tarp of mine.

Oh and I found a place to take that much needed poser shot for when the build is finally finished....
 
I took more pictures today. Mainly because I like pictures, and because the only shots I have of the thing really are crap. Monkey crap really, so here are some pretty good pictures.

You can see the lights I hooked up aswell, and the "bit" of bondo I used to fill the spaces that were left between the weld seems, and junkety junk junk.

Why not rtemove the inner well, run a support beam from the firewall to the core support and hang a big rig mud flap from it? You could space it away from the frame enough to let it breath a bit, but close enough that it wouldn't interfere with the tires.
 
So stick the mudflap in a postion to keep the mud off the engine??

I was thinking about that a while back and plum forgot about it...

I think it would be a good altenative, because it could flex if the the tire DID make contact with it.


I am just gonna trim the outer fender for now. And minimalistic at that. I'll draw something up for when I do a tire uprgrade.

And it will probably use that mudflap idea too.
 
I hope you dont mind me choppin your pic, but I like your truck and was looking at it and desided to throw some ideas your way. I think I would finish it off this way. Hopefully you understand my hamfisted pic.
