burb owners

Either you type REALLY quick, or you were reading my mind!

[/ QUOTE ]a little of both. also, my 454 is not a TBI unit, and I do not have an overdrive. I figgure TBI would get me to 13 or 14, and overdrive could get me to 17 or 18... the type of numbers that excursion drivers have wet dreams over... expedition drivers too... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Edit: the other key to my 13 MPG is, thats loaded, empty, uphill, downhill, at high altitude, hauling a trailer, or not, and wether I'm heavy footed or light footed. basicaly, as long as its timed properly, it gets 13 MPG, end of line. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I hear you on that overdrive issue. I love the Turbo 400 for it's strength and durability (my brother once moved 3000 lbs of brick, gas & fat A$$ in the truck - no sweat) but I would sure like a 4th gear for the highway. I am not a maniac but I always figure the signs on the left of the highway [SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT] have just as much meaning as the 55-65MPH signs. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I suppose this is why Heavy4x4 mentioned

If you're in the market to buy one, the BEST (I think) second generation suburban out there is the '91 2500 4x4. Mainly because you get the 4L80e tranny and a stronger drivetrain.

I bought mine from LMC. I believe they were about $30 each. I'm not sure how they will fit and all since I haven't been able to install them yet. I plan on doing all the weatherstriping but just bought the front to see if i liked the ones from LMC.

the /forums/images/graemlins/burb.gif got close to 200k on it and i think its a 1/2t, not sure, and it runs fairly well for the abuse its had. the main reason i'm interested in it is that i can haul much more crap in it than my /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif . for all who don't know the burb is and '83 .

as far as the gas issue this would be mainly used to go camping, hunting , etc... and that's why i'll leave the 700r4 in it despite all the problems i've had with them in my /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif

however i'm currently toying with idea of converting my carbed k5 to TBI and this whole thing would have to sit on the back burner for awhile.

Best part: it has saved my life a couple of times.
I've been side-impacted in it, hit a deer with it, and run over a CJ-5 driveshaft at 82 mph and survived a blowout in it.

Even better: you can't tell that any of the above have ever happened unless I tell you! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Parts are plentiful and cheap. Cargo room is vast. Raining?-- you can still haul 4x8 sheets of wallboard or plywood in it. I've even put my riding mower and bales of straw into the back of it. I've even moved using it- twice!

The long wheelbase is exceptionally stable for towing. The TH700R4 I have has great low-end grunt that really aids in stoplight launches while towing my boat.

I've had mine for almost ten years now. I've driven it a lot of places in that time, camped with it, fished off of the tailgate, explored places, etc.

I've retired it from running in salt, but even then it has held up fairly well and any rust repairs have been fairly easy. Body parts are available for any part of a Suburban. Even the rear body/tailgate hinge support is now available. Many parts are bolted together on the Suburban just as they are on the pickups of this body style-- e.g. floor, etc.

Mine's a 4x2, but still has left the pavement on occasion. For "trail" riding, though, I must admit that I use my new toy- a '98 Wrangler. Convertibles are fun.

BUT, nothing rides as well as a Suburban. Nothing compares to V-8 power in a large vehicle with all the power goodies... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Even now, at 17 years old, my Suburban is still the lowest maintenance-cost vehicle I've ever owned. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I love my 99 2wd. Great tow vehicle, around town, roadtrips, whatever. It's been very reliable. The only thing I don't like(and it's not the sub fault) is not having a pickup bed to put some of the bigger/messier stuff I haul around.

i totaly love my suburban. i got an 85 and have put matresses in it and am going to be taking it on its first road trip in the end of may. it rocks of road for being stock but the longer wheel base got me hung up once and i lost my pass. side running board /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif but i dont think i would trade it for any thing unless it was a mint 1993 (old body style) dodge ram 1 ton cummins turbo diesel, 4x4, dually, manual trans, 4 door and a banks power kit. that is my dream truck right there and i would use it to tow my sub to all these cool places to wheel out of state.

[/ QUOTE ]just my opinion, but I'd use the sub to tow the dodge to the wheelin' places... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
