Burban 40gal tank in a K5?

The frame is different from the early to the 82-86.
The 87 up is for injection.

I had no idea a burb tank would fit. Interesting... :)

I saw a thread a LONG time ago where someone was putting it in there. Took a little work but he got it to fit no problem.

If I remeber right the guy used 56" springs in the rear and put the short side to the front to move the axle froward along with Zero rates. I can't remember what else he did but it wasn't extinsive. I wish I would have saved the thread but it was on here about 2-3yrs ago. I remember reading about it and thinking that the price to fill it up would kill me since my blazer used to be my Daily Driver. Now I am dedicating it to Off-Road use only. If I ever find the thread I will post a link.

if it's off-road only, why do you want such a big tank? that means MAJOR extra weight for fuel on the trail. most of us wish we could get a 15 gallon tank that fits flush with the bottom of the frame rails... less weight, no clearance issues, no dangers w/ departure angles. i bet you'll regret doing this modification if you do any wheeling that requires a decent departure angle.

Why not just use a 31 gallon tank? even at 10 mpg you have 310 mile range. No mods needed and easy bolt in also the skid plate works!

If I ever get mine wheeling, I will be looking at a larger tank. With a mild big block and wheeling in the middle of no where.... as much fuel as possible is a good thing.
Just because you have a 40 gallon tank, doesnt mean you have to always have 40 gallons in it. So, when you are local or close to stations... just fill it up half way. Simple.

But, I think I want to keep the tank in the location and cut the floor out in the back to fit more... if its an option.

I have the 31 gallon tank. My K5 originally came with the diesel, so I assume that's why it has the big tank. It's nice not to have to fill up as often. If you wan a bigger tank, that's the route I would take. Just my.02.

I had one once and I couldn't see any easy way to make it fit. The Blazer tank is angled in the back while the Sub one is straight, so it will hang down past the bumper a lot, requiring a custom skid plate. It's also so long that the rear axle will hit it on stuff. The 31-gallon fits perfectly, though.

That's on the highway. On a slow trail, my truck is more in the 1 gallon per hour range...

The 40 gallon burb tank won't fit the blazer without removing a crossmember and moving the axle forward A BUNCH.

you're going to be on a trail for more than 31 hours? without coming back to a base camp? i still think you're better off with a small tank that gives you good clearance and departure angles and bringing extra fuel to base camp.

"you're going to be on a trail for more than 31 hours? without coming back to a base camp?" It has been known to happen in these areas.

I would still stick with the 31 gallon I have now. It is much easier to carry two jerry cans that hold 5 gallons each than to have that massive tank hanging down that far, and having to move the axle enough to clear. For the work involved, and the cost, you could easily carry three jerry cans on the rear bumper for when you need the extra. Just my .02 of course.

what about the 40 gallon burban tank in the pickups, how do they fit in those? Im toying with the idea of ditching my saddle tanks and going to a burban tank.

i can't imagine 31 hours of my truck running on a trail without going back to a base camp. that's insane. i can see being stuck and being out there for over 24 hours, but not with the engine running for 31 hours before returning to some sort of base camp.... yowza! :yikes:
