If all goes according to plan, it looks like I will be able to buy a new truck in the next few months. I'm looking towards an '07-'08 Chevy half ton extended cab 4x4 around $20,000.

My first range of questions simply lies with what do you think I should look out for? I'm curious as to how the push button 4x4 works, and its reliability. Is it simply a servo in the transfer case that engages the front wheels when activated? Is there any sort of delay (the wheels having to make a full rotation) before it is engaged, like old auto-hub chevys? Is the front driveline always engaged or electronic locking hubs or something? Anyone have a schematic? I like the floor mounted shifter in the LS models, but they're not as common and there are some nice goodies in the LT package.

Second, what can I expect as far as price negotiation? Since the economy is the way it is I don't know how lenient dealers are with their cars. Of course I'll turn my 'swag' on to shimmy down the price, but what is a realistic amount they would come off? Anybody have any recent experience with this, or just general knowledge of it?

Finally, what can I expect from General Motors? I'm referring more to like warranties. If they are bought/sold with different people running it, will the warranties I get when buying one be honored? Seems to me to be competitive they couldn't afford screwing over a bunch of their customers that hard. Let's please not focus on this point entirely :D. Thanks for the help.

P.S. I know there are a lot of haters of newer trucks, including/especially Chevys, even in a Chevy forum, but I'm pretty set on this. I'm most familiar with them and have always been a Chevy person. Thanks again!!

They are nice trucks. Most of the hate it towards their off roading ability, but really, on the street, they are sweet. As long as you don't plan to lift it or run really weird tire/wheel combo's, it will live a good life.

Are the electronic transfer cases as reliable as the lever shift? They never will be, but the reliability is up to the point that i wouldn't worry about it too much. The 4x4 is like all the 90's IFS trucks.....there is an actuator in the front end that engages the differential, then the switch also engages the xfer case. The front 1/2 shafts (cv shafts) spin all the time, the front driveshaft only spins when the xfer case is in 4wd or the front diff is locked. Don't know how much that system has been improved, but really, that front diff lock fails more than the transfer case engagement. It was famous for failing on the early 90's one, but the later 90's and im guessing 2000's should be more reliable. In terms of lag, the only lag would be that front engagement, and its about as quick as the xfer case engagement on the new ones. No rotation of the wheels is necessary.

I personally wouldn't buy one w/o the factory tow package, but would also look at the hitch to see if its been used or repainted to cover up use. The 1/2 tons tow fine, but it is a lot of strain on them, and towing is normally the first thing to kill or weaken the trans.

Once you get it, throw a good trans cooler on there, and enjoy!

Nope. I really haven't spent much time in the newer (07/08) trucks, so don't have much other feedback. Surprised you havent' gotten any other responses on here. There are at least a handful of guys driving them.

Good luck!

im gambling silverado?

I own a 2008 silverado crew cab 4x4 z-71 that I bought new in 2009.

MSRP was $37.9k walked out the door for $24.5k.......

I love this thing....

nice ride, comfy seats, good power (5.7l) only lost to a rustang gt at a ligth (you know where the lanes merge.. I hate it when people try and pass on the right...), great towing.. told not to tow with under 500 miles.. truck went from stealership to uhaul and got a car hauler and took my camaro home....

also let me know what kind of options, miles, etc.....

here she is...

Good to see someone else post experiences. Except the 5.7L hasn't been the 1/2 ton truck since 98. You've either got a 5.3 or 6.0.

How did you get that truck for 24k??? That's a steal

Yeah, what dfl701 said. Holy crap, that's like 30% off. And it's not like it's a pair of boots or something. Nice truck though. What package is it (LS, LT, LTZ)?

I've been looking at 07-08s with 25,000 to35,000 miles in LS and LT trims with everything I want for around $20-$25K. Extended and crew cabs.

I think I will definitely be checking out the New side of the lot to see just what they can do.

Warranties that are from the manufacturer are good no matter if you are the original owner or not. Extended warranties can be switched to the new owner most of the time for a fee.

As far as "room to negotiate" every dealer will be a little different on how they value or price a vehicle. The best things for you to do to keep from being taken and help get the best deal are to.
First arm yourself with knowledge about the truck you want, once you decide on a truck look up the values on nada.com The banks look at the loan value on nada for loan purposes.
Second know your finance options. With good credit on a new truck dealers can offer good apr sometimes 0%. With not so good credit on a used truck you might do better at your local bank. They can make a lot of money on the "back end" of a deal in the finance office.
I am a small dealer in MO if you have any questions feel free to PM me.

here is the deal...
i too was in that boat... i found lease returns that they wanted bookoo bucks for ... I have bought a few new and never paid msrp...

first is first...
my '96 camaro broke 4 times in 6months... now this time was a driveshaft.. bear in mind there is no grease fittings... so understandable.. I told the wife to take me to work.. ill find a driveshaft.. she could pick it up and have a towtruck take the car home and i would fix it.. she said ... NO YOU NEED SOMETHING MORE dEPENDABLE!!!!!!!!

i was upset because she already said yes to the new camaro which was not out yet.... so she also said the mudder had to come off the road ... so she wanted me to get a silverado..

so off to 3 stealerships... now you tell them up front.. I am going in a line from here to here to here.....

first dealership was burns gmc....
silverado extended
remote start, non z-71.. 4.8l, 4wd..... not great.... $32k.... I didnt walk up to it and go .. WOW THAT IS MY TRUCK... the guy said he would give me a great deal... it had $8k miles as a demo.... i told him off to the next dealership but told him i will let him know if i find anything and if not maybe we can work something out...

off to Elkinds chevrolet:
nothing there but for a silverado ls extended...
48.l, bedliner, charcoal, 4wd, running boards, air deflectors, etc..
I forget the price... I was going to buy it.. told him give me the best deal and I will take it... day is ending and we need something....
so he throws numbers together.. and i say.. why $800 bedliner, $$$$ for this and for that.. he says.. they are on the truck but additions... so I said... I dont like that.... tell him find me nicer rims and ill take it... so they started looking.. before buying I called 73 chevrolet... where i bought a 1994 cavalier in 1995 and my 1996 camaro in 1997.... i said exactly what I wanted...

dark blue, crew cab, z-71, 5.3L... she said she had 3 so get there now and they will hook me up....

I walked back in and said.. I had one more dealership to go to.. they tried getting me to buy theirs. but i had to go look...

I get to 73 chevrolet.. and viola .... up front running is this truck... I get there and look it over... she comes out and asks if I am jeff.. I said yes..

when I saw the truck my jaw dropped.. I was like WOW LOOK AT THAT...I CAN ROCK THAT!!!!!!!!!! (not until warranty is out.. getting 36's!!!!!!!!!!)

anyhow... she wanted to go for a test drive.. I never test drive until i buy it as I know what i want.. and we will work out any bugs or issues later...

go for test drive.. it was soo me... then we get gas (which got me mad) I told her that she just ruined my sales ending.. I usually beatup a dealer then when they are at their lowest.... tell them to fill it up and ill take it.. well she just filled it up!!!!!!!!!!!!

so back to the dealership...
we sit down and I tell her... you give me the best numbers on paper as I dont mess around with payments, etc..... she said ok...
I told her the truck I was looking at and going to buy if she didnt hook me up was $32k before all rebates and all...

so they took the msrp from $37,998 to $30,180 on their own.. then $6500 rebate plus $4000 rebate as we did our own financing....

all in all. it was $25,495.... julie (my better half of 18 years) and i discussed $25k is where we expect to be...
so we tried high and low to get $495 off and said we would take it.. the dealership manager came over and said he is all in and cant go any lower.. if we cant pay that then he cant sell it to us...

so to that we agreed it was fine... however i have $1160 on my gm card..... gm points...

so got
$6500
$4000
$7800
_________
$18,300 off

the deal is if i bought a 2009 (bought it in 2009 and bought a 08 leftover) there was only $1500 off.. that is it... plus they wouldnt move much off of the MSRP...

so find a leftover... 09's are hard to find as i thougth of trading mine in for some options i didnt get...

sorry for the long post... HAHAHAHAHAHAHa...

also quickie.. bought a 2005 trailblazer ext in 2006 for wife.. extended edition...

msrp $36k got it for $21,400..... through beating them up.. 2hrs away in toms river nj.. i searched their inventory and they didnt know it existed...
same thing... rebates, own financing for more rebates (sometimes 0% is cheaper in payments but no one had 0%)... plus beat them up....

didnt really post them here... as i am not even on ps.com anymore either...

just too many ret-ards everywhere....

read through the z-71 thread and you will see that my z-71 is only capable of towing papa johns pizza as long as garlic salt is on a gooseneck and the driver..... duhhhhh

power of the 5.3 is nice too... 325hp.. I have only lost to 1 car so far.. u know the guy.. get out of line to pass everyone on the right then merge over..

i beat pathfinders, exporers, ford pickups, etc.... lost to a mustang gt... but i plan on installing a supercharger once the warranty runs out..
i want more power to even give that gt a run for his money. i did make him work for it as he didnt think 1. i was going to nail it off the line... 2. he didnt expect me to be packing a bit of power....3. he was smoking and it was a stick and light changed when i saw his hand with cig in his mouth.....:haha:

and 20 minutes ago i just took out a beautiful mustang fastback... definitely not the best running though.. not sure if they had powerfull motors but from the start we both took off... and i just never stopped pulling away from him and he cut in behind once i was 4 truck.. yes truck lengths away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :wink1:
