Buying a used NP205? What to look for??

Hey Guys,

I need a NP205 for my TH400 and found one for sale locally. I was going to go look at it, but i was wanting some advice from someone on what i should look for. Like Fluid level, Slack etc??

depending on tail shaft your 400 has will determin the tcase style needed.

2 32 spline inputs offered for 205.

early fig 8 adaptor style = short input. required for doubler build.

later round 6 adaptor style = long input. not usable for doubler builds.

then other than that thay have some play inside. but grab a yoke and check for major play. best pull it in 4x4 if possible and hold another yoke to check.

flat flange front output is better = 30 spline front shaft . stronger than 10 spline shaft.

fixed yoke rear best. but not a deal breaker. easy swap to fixed yoke.

easy to reman also. i have a full write up in the tech section.

hard to tell.

little is normal but you will know if its a ton.

if a lot its basicly a reman with bearings .

The yoke will turn, say 1/16" of an inch or so radially but that's not what might be worn out (the gears are what would determine that backlash and if they are bad everything else will be too and there will be tons of up/down and side/side movement in the yokes).


The only wear I've really seen on a 205 was from the little needle bearing on the back side of the front output and that's really easy to check. There is a large (6" diameter or so) aluminum plate on the back side of the case, it is removed by simply removing the eight or so bolts holding it on.

This will also give you a chance to look at the bottom of the case for metal fragments.

BTW, the yoke will have some up/down play, .020" maybe? Its easy to pull the input/output seal retainers too to check those bearings. Plus its a good idea to replace all those while you have the case out of the truck.
