I'm ordering some class packs for my balzer. I'm running a caddy 500 with stock manifolds but probably will move to headers down the road. There's no exhaust on it right now.

What size inlet and outlet should I go with.
 
single or true dual?
single i would go with a 3"
dual -i would say 2 1/2" would be plenty
 
i would go with 2 1/2" then, with decent bends in the pipe it will flow more then you will need unless you go crazy on the caddy motor. also if you haven't already; check out CMD cadillac motorsports development and MTS maximum torque specialties, they have a wealth of cad parts and some really great info on those motors.
 
You want 3'' for ~18'' after the collector then go to 2.5'', x-pipe is recomended aswell as mandrel bent tubing.

I would stay away from the glasspacks, loud and can be restrictive. Quality mufflers have a good sound without being obnoxious and will flow as good and some are better than glasspacks.
 
dooo! forgot all about an x or an h-pipe, yes , a very good idea and generally they sound much more balanced with some sort of crossover.
 
Curious but how can a Glasspack be restrictive? You can look straight through any true glasspack.
 
Interesting. Be interested to see some more tests like that of Gibson, Magnaflow, and some of the other more modern products on the market.

I'm surprised that you guys say 2-1/2 true duals for a big block motor. I understand the x/h pipe helps alot but I've always thought that for a mild small block you'd want 2-1/4 true duals or a very well bent 3" system and for a hot small block you'd want 2-1/2 with and x or h pipe. As far as a big cube motor went I thought you wanted at least 3in true duals to let the beast breath. Have I been misinformed?

3" is usually overkill for anything but a big block that revs real high. How often do you see Caddy motors turning 5000rpm (and see them live to run again)? A well designed 2-1/2" system won't flow as much as a 3" system, but it will keep the gasses hotter, making them move faster. Plus it's easier to fit a 2-1/2" pipe under the truck.

That being said. The 454 I'm building will be run on a 2-1/4" true dual system. But only because that's whats on the truck now. It will eventually end up with a 2-1/2", x-pipe and low restriction mufflers.
