Didnt want to bother making 2 threads.

Question 1: I just recently put a stock snorkeled aircleaner on my truck. By snorkeled I mean its closed all around and has the duct for cold air tube. I ran an open element before hand and for some odd reason my gas mileage seems like its suffered horribly. With the open element I would pull 12-17mpg depending on driving. With the snorkeled cleaner it seems like I'm well into the single digits. Is that possible or is it my imagination?

Question 2: I'm interested in getting a 38in pair of Michelin XL or XZL military tires. Are there ANY good current sources for these?

What is your engine situation? What tune, engine displacement, carb/tbi, heads etc...

355 "computer compatible cam". Stock heads, stock intake. TBI spacer, tbi injector spacer, full length headers.

It has a crappy magazine chip in i I need to change to a tbichips.com chip...

Hmm. It may simply not be getting enough air and causing a overly rich condition and with the nature of your chip it sounds like it would need to be tuned to specifically how you intend to run it all the time. Your comp might not be able to adjust for the condition based on the chips burn. How many miles have you had the closed element on there? I had an 88 with tbi and BB. Got it with an open element and switched it back to the closed stock one and it ran worse. Not alot but enough to feel in the seat of my pants kind of thing. Sometimes our seat lies. LOL

Ughh only a couple trips back and forth from the shop. I had wanted to do a snorkel eventually. Perhaps the rush of cold air would help?

Sometime you need to put a few miles on them to allow the ECU to 'adjust' to the new condition. Mine was like that. In theory you shouldnt but i would run it for a couple hundred miles before you do anything to it yet. I did notice a slight increase in power and MPG with K&N filter in my stock aircleaner for my 86. But that is the last year of the carbed trucks so it doesnt apply so much to your situation.

Well I think what I'm gonna do is build myself an air cleaner that can house a 3in tall k&n with a large opening for a snorkel in the future. The stocker cleaner housing seems really restrictive...

As far as the tires go, I got mine from 100dollarman, vendor on Pirate. Here's a link to his tire thread on Pirate- http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=759158

He's also got a website- http://www.100dollarman.com/

Either post up over there or give him a call to check what tires he currently has. His inventory is constantly changing. Reading his latest reply, as of yesterday, he says he currently has no tires for a 16" rim. Which is what the 11.00r16's (appx 39x11x16) would be. Can't hurt to call though.

I called him an hour ago. He said the truckload he got (which you bought from I take) was the first and probably the last shipment of 16" wheel tires hes gotten.

I talked to a guy in georgia today. He told me $75 a tire for 50%'ers. Figured if I can find good ones for a decent price I could groove them. Your suppose to be able to get almost another 1/2in out of them i've read :eek1:

I dunno. IMO, if it was restrictive, they'd of made the opening/snorkel larger. Cheap performance, I would THINK GM could have figured that out. Any math wizards can tell how much air can be passed through the opening? That being said however... in the future I plan on finding me another stocker and combine the two so I'll have dual snorkels :waytogo: Unless I can find a real dual snorkel for dirt cheap, but probablly not happening.

So anyone trying to get rid of a stock air cleaner

With your new air cleaner, you ran the tubing up through the rad support, right? If it's not a cold air induction, what's the point? The snorkeled cleaner with the cold air intake tube should give a little better MPG than the open element. Did you get the tall filter one or the car one? Is the charcoal ring still in it?

No I didnt run the stock cold air. Point of putting the stock cleaner back on with no ducting was to avoid water splash in the engine bay getting at the filter.

No charcoal ring. I gutted all the preheater controls and filled all the openings in the cleaner.

Check Ebay and one of the search engines that searches Craigslist over larger areas. There might be someone selling a set. Seems like lately I've seen a few sets here and there for sale. Lots of folks snapped them up a few years ago and some are now going..."oh yeah...wtf am I going to do with these?"
