CA Diesel Conversion Smog

No doubt the Cummins is a great motor, but a Duramax is a direct bolt in using factory parts. Once installed properly you could take it to any dealer for service or repairs.

This.

And, i'm not looking at doing a swap. I'd be buying one done, and no one is doing cummins swaps.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

If one uses a bit of out of the box thinking, I would be willing to bet a Duramax will go in a Burb with no more trouble/probably less trouble than a Cummins. Not to mention there is a company that did/does them and uses factory GM wiring. Think about it, GM cabs are all basically the same and has for the most part the same punch outs and markings as a pickup or suv.

I want to do a Duramax truck but in an 87 1 ton Dually I have access too because 1 the Cummins is so overdone its old, 2 the Allison is better than any tranny Dodge has ever produced since Dodge debuted in the 20s, and 3 with ALL GM hardware it "theoretically" can be taken to a GM dealership for service. Not that I would but its a neat concept.

Not to mention the Cummins are horribly loud (especially the old 12 valves) and I for one can not stand the sound of them idling in a parking lot.

A Duramax is a bolt in on a 2000's Suburban? That's news to me...

Yep. It's a fairly involved bolt in swap, but basically take everything out of the pickup and put it in a burb. The wiring is all pretty muchthe same, the motor mounts bolt up, the cluster plugs in, etc. I rresearched it a good bit once upon a time when I saw the first duraburb videos on YouTube. I've forgotten most of it now and rRussell knows a ton about it. But other than it being a big long process, it's all a factory swap kinda thing.

I wouldn't have guessed, that's pretty awesome!

Definitely sounds like more than the one wire it takes to run a 12V but I can appreciate the smoother V8 diesel. Plus you don't see a lot of Duramax conversions, would be cool for sure!

You might post your question on pirate4x4.com and on some diesel/tow rig sites. And you might also go down to a local dmv office and ask about it.

And if it looks to be a fiasco, I would seriously start considering the 8.1.womt do any better or worse mpg than your tbi 350, but it will tow eleventy billion times better.

In some ways the duramax swap is easier than a Cummins in these trucks. Mostly cause the body control modules and stuff is all swapped so the gages all work with no mods. And all the hoses etc are all factory parts. Nothing custom.

I guess that isn't surprising, GM is good at letting the aftermarket swap parts easily!

Now, why didn't GM offer 2500 Suburbans with the Duramax stock...

They said its because the Duramax is for straight up towing big loads and if you're serious about it you'll have a 5th wheel in the bed which of course you can't do with a suburban. You can only tow so much off of a conventional hitch. I still think its foolish to not offer it especially when Ford sold a lot of diesel Excursions. If it was a factory option, there is no doubt I'd have one in my driveway.

So, I put a deposit down on a dmax suburban build.

It will start as a clean title rig, so it will be smogged and registered in my name before going under the knife.

When I get it home, i'll start working on a referee cert, but really, would probably be able to fly under the radar for 2 years before smog was due and it became an issue.

We shall see.

I'm freaking stoked.

The 91 will stick around though, too attached to sell for so little money.

That's the sweetness. Do you have a rig picked out as the base yet or no?
