Ca smog experts

Yea I agree, I've never heard of that personally so I find it unlikely especially if you are a guy who respects the law.

Since the MSD appears to be legal for all 1987 and older GM vehicles (rather than listing a year range), it looks like I can use that without updating any of the other smog equipment. This is a super attractive option even above the factory GM TBI since that would require updating all the extra stuff along with the TBI. Might be worth the hassle of the MSD box for the distributer. I'll be calling them for sure.

IF, and that's a big IF, you get a ticket, then just throw your carb back on and get inspected. But what is ever going to make a police officer open your hood and look at your fuel delivery system? As far as your conscience goes, the EFI mod should run a lot cleaner than a Carb. Don't live in fear of the extreemly slim chance a cop will inspect your engine. Has that ever happened to any California driver here? Only way I can see that is if you have some obnoxiously loud exhaust and/or you drive like a complete ass.

Around here we have the "smog surveys". CHP sets up a mobile dyno and does a complete smog test on vehicles going down that road. It is voluntary, but most people don't know it. Youjust tell them you don't want to participate in there survey and drive off. Legally they can't force you.

I have driven past 4 or 5 of them, so far have not been asked to participate.

I live in Ventura county too, haven't seen one yet, but I'm guessing it would be easy to decline since many K5s have 203s (or at least came with them) and you can't dyno one. I switched mine to a 205, but that will be my reason.

The ones I've seen are 4 wheel rollers. Haven't been invited to participate however I've passed a couple.

I haven't seen any of those, but not too worried if I do. Any kind of reasonably running engine in my truck would pass a sniffer test, my questions are more geared to being technically legal from a bureaucratic stand point.

That's not for you, those rolling smog stops are for the station that validated your smog. If you fail you gotta retest but they're looking for bum smog shops mostly, or so I've been told.. based on the regulations I read (have to check again) it said that you couldn't be detained or delayed during one of those stops. Much to their chagrin.
