what year is the cut of for smog in CA now some people tell me its still 74 and some have told me its now 77. so whats the real deal?

California no longer does the progressive year rule with their smog. If I'm wrong somebody will chime in, but I believe 1975 and earlier are smog free. Anything newer than that has to be smogged.

Smog Information

Currently, smog inspections are required for all vehicles except diesel powered vehicles, electric, natural gas powered vehicles over 14,000 lbs, hybrids, motorcycles, trailers, or vehicles 1975 and older.

1976 and later must be smogged every 2 years.

it WAS up to 76' at one point but they they resinded the law back a year to 75' as mtnman210 stated. atleast all the full convertable rigs are smog free now.

I have a 75' but I'm wondering about these random vehicle check that pop-up around here. Itook most of the [useless] smog off the engine, I'm I free and clear?

Just because your year vehicle no longer needs to be tested doesn't mean you can remove any smog equipment. If you read the law it is illegal to remove any smog equipment from ANY vehicle regardless of year. Will you ever get caught, maybe, maybe not.

also - some counties, such as siskiyou county, are exempt from CA smog laws. If you have a permanent address in these counties (all far north) then CA smog laws do not apply to you.

Yes "legally" in California you cannot remove your smog equipment. But with that said I've never had any smog stuff on my 77, no cat, just headers to true duals out the back. and it's 100% LEGAL:whistle: well on paper anyways. I'm sure if were to be inspected for some reason I'd get nailed.

I'm sure it depends on where you live in Cali but my dad's '75 has absolutely no smog equipment on it anymore...its a 390 bored .060 over...headers into a short y pipe into a flowmaster and dumps under the cab...

Its insanely loud and he has never once been pulled over for it. Its obvious that its not legal and they still don't say anything.
