So I have an 81 k5 Blazer I need to get to pass, I have a guy that will pass all the visuals OK I just need it to pass the sniffer, my truck has headers with no cats and cam, I have the stock air filter, and can get some cats online, I was told the requirements for an 81 are pretty easy to pass. Has anyone done this? Anything else I will need?

It should only have 1 cat. I would test it after you put it on. Most places will test again for way cheaper if you fail. At least if you fail youll know number wise what needs to be fixed to pass. Where are you in the bay?

I have a true dual exhaust setup, would it work with two cats welded in right after the headers? I am in Morgan Hill, is just 10 miles south of San Jose

Which side is he going to test? :)

I've heard of testers failing people for having problems at the tailpipe. I can't recall what it was, but it was either too little volume or too clean for the chosen engine.

Are you going to be able to get away with a non-9 million dollar CA compliant converter? Depending, it might make sense to go back to single exhaust.

Technically you will fail a visual test as well as I believe that year didn't come factory with dual exhaust. You will probably pass with a cat and single exhaust as modern cats are very efficient. Also if the numbers on the cat don't match what is approved for CA use you will fail as well. A well designed and bent single exhaust will still give you good power and be legal.

My part of California, we used to test some first when asked. That just changed a couple of months ago. You now have to go the full
test or nothing.
