anybody have an idea if this is possible looking for the best bang for the buck swap in my tow rig (85 siverado 305/700r4/208 3/4t axles). also what would be my best bet for a t-case? i have a couple of 205's lying around. reason i dont want a th400 is that i want some flavor of OD and i think the 4500 would be cheaper than say a 4l80e. or does anyone think the 700r would live if rebuilt w/ some better parts? thanks -justin

Do a search ... pretty sure that no manuals came with the BOP bolt pattern, so you'll hafta use an adapter plate. Coupla threads about this recently.

The only manual bellhousing you'll find that may work would be one from a late '70s GM truck that came w/ a 350 diesel. These are rare so goodluck. I've never found one myself.

A search will net you all the info you need, but here is a quick run down

1.caddy has no pilot bearing hole, but can be drilled
2. BOP to chevy bell adapter from jegs or summit
3.Very pricey aftermarket flywheel, cause a Cad 500 never came w/ a stick
4. A 700r4 will be on borrowed time
5. you can mate the 4500 to a 205, but I think I would go w/ whatever it has behind it, unless you are going to wheel it.

Last but not least is that the 4500 uses a special size bellhousing (think$$$) so you'll have to get one of those to fit a small block chev and then use an adapter for the bellhousing to engine block.

arent BBC and SBC bolt pattern the same? so if the 4500 came from behind a vortec 454 wouldnt it have the correct bell? what other trannys would be good options that might be less expensive? thanks- justin

That might work. You might wan't to check trustyk5's post about putting a 4500 behind his 6.2. Lots of good 4500 info there. It was in the garage as I recall. The 4500 is the only manual with OD that will take the torque in a heavy vehicle that I know of.

i was thinking that an auto would be an easier swap but built OD autos are expensive as crap. like a 4l80e w/ stand-alone controller is upwards of 3500$. :( I converted my blazer (sm465) to hydro clutch using wilwood and Novak parts and it was pretty much a bitch and though it works well it could be better. so i would not look forward to retrofitting a pedal assm. and master cyl to this truck too. i think if i do it i will build my own pedal, hanger and linkage from scratch to get the proportions right.

You are right about the 4l80e being high dollar. How cheap do you think you will get by w/ the nv4500 swap though? Last time I chesked the flywheel alone is about 6 bills? Espesially if you adapt a 205 behind it. The Dodge models may have came w/ a 205. I know there is a difference between the dodge & chevy 4500's but can't remember what it is. I think the chevy version is the more favored one.
