Cage, bender ?\'s

1)What do you use for a roll cage tubing or pipe?
2)What is the difference between the two?
3)What size of "pipe or tubing"to use?
4)What is a nice, reasonably price bender, web link please

Re: Cage, bender ?\'s

you use tube to make a roll cage

pipe is mesured form the I.D. inside

tube form the O.D. out side

when I buy me a bender I am going to use 2" tube, some people use 1-3/4 " or 1-5/8" to make a cage

the bender I am going to buy is a JD2 Model 3 it is about 500 for the bender and one die set

JD2 Model 3

I am no expert but I thank ever thing I said is right

I am using the JD2 bender also. It works very well. Plan on using some sort of hydraulic set-up if you want to bend heavy wall tubing. I am bending 2" .134 DOM and you can't do it with the hand lever. I used the ram from my engine hoist in a simple custom set-up. It is a lot of arm pumping but pretty easy, and the bends are perfection. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif Good luck. JT

Re: Cage, bender ?\'s

That just about covers all of it. The JD2 bender is a good one. I have a 2" and an 1 1/2" die for mine. Here's a few more things:

Most people use HREW for bumpers and rocksliders, and some use it for cages. DOM is also used for cages and general fab stuff. I won't get into the strength issues, but they are both OK to use, DOM is usually more per foot.

.120 wall is a common tube thickness to use for most tube work.

If you buy a JD2 bender, get the 180 degree dies. Most of the bends will usually be 90 or less, but it's nice to be able to make "hoops" or anything else that would require a bend more than 90 degrees.

Also, get a decent notcher. Chop saws work, but the notchers will pay for themselves quickly.

I have a VanSant model 3 www.vansant.com its the same bender, just sold by and through them. I am bending 2" x .120 wall tubeing by hand with no problems, I have a 4 foot long cheater bar and its very easy to bend.

I used 1.75" .120 wall HREW tubing for mine. And a borrowed Greenlee bender!
