So with my upcoming cage build we were looking into pricing on tube.

Nate is getting a quote from his work as well.

But just from bretts quote today, he got a bunch of different sizes quoted EW and DOM. And wow the EW is way cheaper.

I know everybody says DOM, DOM, DOM. But what If I was to make the main hoops out of DOM, and us EW for the crossbars etc? Save some cash etc on the pieces that wouldnt take a direct hit in a crash etc.

What say ye?

This is kinda what im going for. The red angled bars would go to the b pillar tie in, not to the fender well.

Cage design is more important than base material I have seen poop pipe cages I felt more comfortable in than some DOM cages I have seen.

Hrew or what you have as EW is fine it will save ya once. DOM will save you more than once. Unless your an idiot like me.

Ive heard you say that many times. But honestly, if my blazer rolls and gets into that much damage in the dunes, I doubt the whole truck will be worth much anyways lol.

To be honest, and it sounds stupid, but my whole intentions behind my cage is in fact not to save my life, it is actually so I dont bend the frame while jumping etc. But I think a good design in a cage, will also save lives along with the frame....

So off of that idea. What say you? I really just want it to be strong and structural to keep the thing from turning into a V.

Also what do you think of that design i posted for my purposes? Prolly a few more gussets, and another bar up top, but basically the same.

So couple questions then.

Seat belts? Your gonna want 4 points some day. I love mine. That requires a seat belt bar but you can make that removeable.

I don't like the cage above. No triangulation in the roof. Large unsupported spans.

I will be be getting some type of racing seat. I have an eye on some used Beards, and yes some harnesses.

As I said, I would add some tubes to the roof. Other than that, I like the simpleness off it.

I want it simple as possible. Least amount of tube. I dont wanna get nuts with it. Make it a bit safer, but more importantly make it a strong tie to the frame so that I dont bend the thing up on a hard hit.

Couple triangles in that thing would be nice cage. I like clean looks too

Cool. One thing I noticed, actually like alot, but not sure if its a good idea.

See how the front halo ties into the plate gussets on the upper corners of the b piller?

I like it becasue it means you dont have to do any weird offset bends. I will problably add gussets to every single corner connection fyi.

Any input on that?

Something like that is fine when working in the confines of a vehicle things rarely line up like ya want.

Cool.

So what ya think on my original thought? Run main hoops in dom and the rest in hrew? Or just go all Hrew at that point?

From some stats Ive seen, they really dont seem that much different. But Idk how stats relate to real life.

Nicer to have the b pillar as the strongest bit. I think that's perfectly fine. I also think you would he fine all HREW

Ive always felt for highspeed stuff you should pony up for DOM. That being said around here HREW and DOM are almost the same damn price so theres really no point.

Killer. I mean brett is paying for my cage, as i did all the shelving and stocked one of his big plumbing vans. But there will be a limit. At $70 for dom vs $40 for hrew, I could get a bit more from the deal and less out of my pocket. Maybe a few extra sticks for things here and there. Front bumper, maybe even have some left to build some stuff for other people to make a few bucks.

Alot of reviews ive seen is that hrew seems to just dent alot easier than dom... But realy in the sand... :dunno:

For almost half the price here, I think its the way to go.

If i flip the blazer, I doubt rebuilding the cage will be my concern. It will be finding a whole new body.

Id prolly give up at that point though and just build a tube buggy from scratch lol.

I think Eric has a point though. The design is more important than the material. Plus in a given case like yours weight isnt a super big problem so throwing a couple well placed bars in the correct spots in the name of "overkill" should more than make up.

Also sand is soft. :thumb:
