I'm building a cage for my new rig and am curious about the different ways that I have seen them tied into the frame.I've seen them with urethane isolators so they can flex with the body and I have seen them without(on a full conv. in an attempt to keep the body from flexing and slowly weakening the firewall/windshield area).I am going to run this one through the firewall and down to the frame in front and probably tie it in with the shock hoops as well. The A,B and rear pillars as well.I want some well-founded opinions as to the best way to tie in.pics would be helpful-the more the merrier.Thanks-Allen

this is a topic i'm wanting to learn more about too, because i'll be building a cage over the next few months.

that said, buefchris - what's with the metal plates with the holes in them? what do they do? i see them near the windshield frame and by the door.

Heres pics of the cage

The very rear of the cage is tied to the shackle flip bracket.

Looks like they tie the cage to the body. I'd like to see more pics of that trucks cage myself.

cegusman- why did you choose to tie into the spring mounts?

Extra strength, instead of all the forces pushing against the spring mounts/frame when the suspension travels it is now distributed to the cage too. also if you notice it is tied to the frame too right above the spring hanger.

Heres some stuff I have obseverved over the years. If the cage is tied into the frame the seats must be mounted to the cage and the seat belts, this is preferable anyway. The way cegusman tied in is good as in there is obviously some thought to it, just running stringers to where your cage happens to go through the floor is not the way to do it. Extra bracing (gussets smaller bars from the stringer to the frame etc etc.) is a good idea. Putting the cage to the frame can be stronger than a properly mounted cage to the body but I have seen some pretty poor examples of frame mounting over the years. The more things you can tie in to (sliders bumpers shock mounts etc) the better.

Good luck with it man

One more thing to add, When welding the tube to your frame it is a good idea to weld a plate to the frame 1st so it helps spread out the load a little better. Like in my pic

Do you have a handful of pics you can post of your cage tie-ins to your frame?
