I want more torque but need to stay compliant here in Ca.

The code seems to read that if the motor was an option you can swap it in with out any issue but in 1990 the 4x4 Suburban did not come with a big block as an option however the 2wd did.

Could I put a 2wd 454 with all the smog crap in my 4x4 Suburban and clear all the inspections?

Thanks for any info.:waytogo:

If you are looking to put that 89 454 TBI that is fo rsale on here in your 90 burban... I don't think that will be a legal swap. My understanding is you will have top do a 90 or newer motor, cant go older.

What gearing is in the rear diff?

That's what I thought I remembered being told when I lived out there as well about the newer engine deal. But it was so long ago, who knows what is and isn't legal from day to day there.

Newer engines were ok as long as the smog equipment went with them or was factory equipped or better to the vehicle it was going in.. Something along those lines.

Pick a 1990 motor or newer with either the same displacement or larger....legal swap.

Is it a problem that the 4X4, V2500 in my case, never came with a 454 as long as the 2WD version did?
.... and I assume it needs all the smog equipment that would go with said engine, right?

Sorry for the 20 questions but I don't want to start spending $$$$ on a big block conversion and get told it's no good after the fact.

An engine swap in California needs to be the same year as the vehicle or newer and the same or larger displacement with all the emissions from the donor engine intact. As well you cannot swap a heavy duty engine into a light duty chassis or vise versa. Why not just swap in a better cam into your existing engine along with a better pair of heads?
