What are you using for an e-brake?

well i use the little yellow thing under my front tire. I was just thinking of waking up and smelling the mellinium with a little more technology :D

Why not try the plain old stock parking brake you had with a couple spacers?Isn't that pretty free? Then go with something else if you need it. I guess you would have to have calipers with the levers on them first though, so maybe not free.

Manny you got my eyes opened. Maybe i will call BW and see what they cost. I just need the calipers as i have levers, lines, and everything else. I actually have 2 sets of 77 seville calipers here. They are identical to the eldy brakes ecept they have a little long piston in them. Sold one set on ebay last weekend, But i may hang onto the other set until i get this figured out.
I know of two sets that never could be made to only work well as PARKING brake over any reasonable time span.
One set was owned by MISF and he was tutored by our GM Dealership mechanic friend on what they needed to work right. Came close, but not for long.
The other set was owned by a very mechanically talented Mechanical Engineer friend (whose write up on making them work right can be found on ClassicBroncos.com). He could make them work but every so often they needed more than maint. type attention. He gave up and went to the Currie Exploder kit. Hasn't looked back.

I think that the fact that neither GM nor Ford (the vaunted 'Versailles' rear discs for 9" Fords were this design type) makes parking brakes like this anymore is a good indicator. All of the rear disc p-brake systems that I know of that are not a second, mechanical caliper, are of the drum p-brake in the rotor hat type of design. D-Max's, PSD's, & supposedly the CTD's all use this type of design.
 
I bought a mechanical line lock yesturday, i'm gonna put it in this weekend, we'll see how that works.
The caddy brakes concerned me for the same reason ntsqd spoke about. If they are so great, why are they still not used? Corvette has had disc brakes in the rear since the 70's, but they din't use a caddy stlye brake either.
I dunno, maybe this line lock will work fine and i wont have to worry about it anymore. I just wish there were more inexpensive options.

I am starting to regret converting to disc in the rear.
 
It is the reason I've been holding off on doing my rear disc conversion. I've got all the parts (or cores) for a non p-brake conversion, just not sure what I want to do about the p-brake. Thinking about going to a SYE on the 241 w/ a companion flange output. Wish I still had all of those parts for the 2wd SM420 band p-brake.......
 
I'm about to do a disc conversion too. What type of calipers are necessary to use the stock e-brake setup?
 
It might depend on which "kit" you buy, but the a 12bolt can use 79-85 eldorado rear calipers. You just need a spacer to take up the extra slack in the cable near each caliper.
 
maybe if you have some long concrete lag bolts...u can lag down 2 tires in ur driveway, and everytime u pull in, u can park in a bald 44" boggers:D :haha: that is a pretty cheap way out...:D

that is why I did it.. other than that I leave it in gear when not running.....

go to inspection and the guy hits the ebrake and it works.. that is all he cares.. doesnt even see if it really works.. so theoretically I could make the pedal spring loaded and that would fool them... :haha:

I use dual manual line locks (1 front 1 rear). They are the cheap ones ($35 ea.) but I only use them in off camber situations or in a parking lot (theft deterent if you don't know what it is). There have been a few times when the only tire getting any real grip is on the front.

To use "Park" on the tranny, you can always put the T-case in 4WD. Now if you have open diffs you could still roll if one front and one rear each have little enough traction they can rotate backwards. If the conditions are bad enough (like parking on a hill of wet ice), there might not be a parking brake situation that can hold you. I have seen cars in Houghton get blown SIDEWAYS by the wind because it was so slippery. Pretty funny to see all the cars jammed side by side so nobody can get in them (unless your car is in the line). If it is just a steep grade, you can shift to low range to give your parking pawl an additional 2-2.7:1 advantage.
 
so what if you wanted to use a line lock with a momentary push button...id like to have rear brake for when im climbing since i run a manual but id also like to have a toggle if i stop and need to get out...id put the btton on the steering wheel just like a trans brake..opinions?

I use my line lock as a parking brake most of the time, works fine.
 
use the push-button switch as a jumper wire from the 2 wires on the back of the toggle switch. When the toggle switch is off, the brake is off and when you push the push-button it will jump the toggle switch momentarily to power the circuit but when let go it goes back to what the toggle switch says and when the toggle switch is on the push-button does nothing.
