I have put some miles on my build with the 3.73 in the 14 bolt and am liking it...so now it’s time to source a matching gear set for my front 10 bolt (currently 3.42). I don’t need a front locker for what I use the Jimmy for so looking for an economic solution for some gears.

My 10 bolt is an 89 so I believe it has the 8.5” ring? What years can I source a 3.73 gear set from? I plan on reusing the carrier. Would I be better off just buying a set from Summit, Yukon?? What do you guys think? Also I need to source a truetrac or something similar for the 14 bolt now that I’m sticking with the 3.73 so any suggestions there appreciated too.

You are correct on the 89 being a 8.5. You can use any 8.5 or 8.6 ring and pinion as they are the same. Don't use the the 8.6 master set, use only the 8.5. I got my Detroit true tracs for summit. They have some economical gears set also.

I guess my last question would be are 10 bolt rear axle ring/pinon interchangeable with front axles? There’s a bunch of 3.73 rears around here right now.

i had a friend swap some 10bolt front gears in the back of a late 70's pontiac trans am car no problems . so i dont see why you cant do rear to front .

but if using old it might be hard to setup as the low pinion drives on the coast side and this might make it harder to setup and read the pattern .

what 14 bolt ? sf or ff ? if full float source a gov-loc from a stock axle . i love mine in the trucks i have had with the full float rear . i might even have a decent used one i can part with . come out of my last truck . has 4.10 now . but thats o.k. as the split is 4.10/4.56 so your 3.73 would be just fine on it .

Good points on swapping rear to front. I suppose a new set would be the way to go up front for several reasons.
My 14 bolt is a FF from a ‘75. Didn’t think about the gov lock option...pm me if you’re willing to part with it. I need to do some research on installation but I’d assume it’s pretty straight forward. Thanks for the tips! Yukon stuff is pretty pricey...and I couldn’t even get a hold of anybody to ask questions. Was on hold for over an hour each time I tried and finally said screw it.

14ff is stupid easy to swap carrier . i would even include the side bearings and races so you just swap the gear over and smack back in .

got to dig out the axle and tear down . its behind the shop in snow and mud .

Heck ya that sounds great!

That looks like a good price. I suppose it would be beneficial to get a master kit for install too??
Probably wouldn't hurt. I don't do axles myself, I have a guy who's overhauling mine for $400 and I ordered the r+p/bearing kit/posi bundle for him to use. If you think it's prudent to replace some stuff while you have it all apart, might not be a bad idea.

Im no pro but when i did mine i researched it to death and in my opinion the best option for quality at a good cost is circle k ring and pinnion sets. They are one of many ring and pinnion sets that yukon sells yukon seemes to just rebox others and on a good day you get circle k on a bad day it may be chinease gears. I like revolution brand gear not to be confused with g2 revolution gears. They sell only circle k gears and pricing is good. Brandon provides great service. Check them out. And if you need help here is brandons email. [email protected]

And the site revolutiongear.com

When i ordered i even was able to specify i wanted Timken brand bearings in my master kit. Just my opinion. Good luck Mike

As long as you think he’s cool with sharing the number please do. With how long shipping and parts seem to take these days I just want to make sure I get everything I need. Thanks!
