have the guy use the drums to rig the truck to do the water crossing then luckily he has them to fill w/gas ;-)
in real life i saw them rig sami's wsnorks and little air compressor and they plumbed everything w/air pressure...so if(when) it leaks, it leaks air out...even gauges where pressurized, they drilled little holes in top of plexi for air to bubble out....they had a fleet of them...was a recrecrational ride they rented out w/intentions on driving it chest deep in fl keys somewhere iirc...but i don't think that would cross the mighty mississippi ;-)

If it takes place after the early 80's I say diesel. Superior water resistance and if he's going to the boonies he can get diesel anywhere there's a farm.
NDT's are decent tires offroad but not that great really. Onroad they're pretty lackluster and offroad just about any offroad tire since the 70's is better. However a 9.00-16 would be a 36x9ish-16 for cheap.
Again if it's anytime since the 70's just stick with Swampers. Available and good performance.

Oh yeah, I forget what year but one of the older Land Cruiser Safari Snorkles fits a 73-87(91) GM truck fender and A-pillar pretty well.
Time line is like two years from now. Thought about Diesel then could use the old fryer fat when civilization is dead.

Are there many farms in the Rocky mountains? Think like Colorado area between Ouray and Golden. Denver and Colorado springs are wiped out and toast. New Mexico and AZ not in picture.

Eh, there's enough diesel users out there not to mention any place that would have it's own fleet of big trucks or equipment would need a local supply of diesel. I drove across the UP of Michigan last year and found diesel everywhere I looked. The Rockies can't be any more desolate than US 2 in da UP eh!
However diesel's shelf life isn't great...not like he'd be waiting in lines so hell, 454 TBI!
