Hey guys im new to this forum so im hoping i am posting this in the right section but i have an 87 Jimmy, full size of course, and i want to cam it. What do i need to do in terms of having fuel injection? will it mess anything up in any way? Im still semi-new to this so i hope im not asking anything stupid  .

welcom new member .

computer friendly cam or will idel like crap.

and most anything over stock will be best for custom chip to run the best.

www.thirdgen.org has specific tbi section and cam section for lots of info. free to be member also.

http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/tbi/ top of forums there is 8019 sticky threads with tons of info.

lots of good reading over there.

stock lt1 cam swap in seems to be good comon swap and gets you roller cam at the same time.

I have researched this a lot and I'm sure 4x4high will give you some great advice. Are you looking for more of the sound of a cam or a power increase?

ok you can get a idle cam but with the 350 tbi engines you really need to up the compression to get decent power out of them. I was interested in putting a vortec roller cam in my engine. the tbi engines in our trucks came with a flat tappet cam and have all the provisions for a hydraulic roller set up. the power increase with these engines with their factory compression ratio is not going to be to impressive and your better off leaving it a flat tappet cam. also add a ZDDP additive with your oil changes for extra insurance considering most oils have removed that.

I know but alot of people want to hear that "lope". Ive not heard of anyone using a Comp thumpr cam in a fuelie engine yet even though they are suppose to have good vacuum. Another good rule of thumb is whatever cam you chose stick to 111 or 112 LSA at the most. Ive found the tech department at Jegs is very good with advice, but also a simple email to Comp Cams and they can tell you a great cam for what your setup is and will give you the best results for what you want.

a choppy idle usually means long duration and a close LSA. you would really need a head that would support it at higher rpms or it would not work to it's potential......generally if that's what your after you would need to want to run at high rpms, it wouldn't be a low to mid end torquer setup imo. if that what you want and need to have then you should build the motor as a system. if you throw "parts" at the poor motor you won't be happy, neither will the engine. i've seen this a lot and it could get costly later to make a mistake in the beginning if you build a motor that doesn't fit your driving/use style. not saying this is the case here, just throwing out my experience........for what it's worth.

Well ideally i would like both. But for right now i am mostly looking for that choppy idle.

Choppy idle and fuel injection don't work well together at all when the system is a speed density system as the TBI stuff all is.
