Im doing the timing chain on my 88 :burb: and would like to swapout the cam while im in there. Hoping to get more torque/?. So many options, so little knowledge. What works best with you guys? Its a TBI 350/700r/4.10's on 35s and will be towing alot (nothing major). Heads are rebuilt (stock) waiting to go back in. If I fubar:doah: these exhaust manifolds with busted studs enough I will get new, bettter flowing ones.
Suggestions/Advice? Experiences?
Thanks in advance and happy holidays:xmas:

My best advice in your situation is to call Comp cams and give them your info and let them choose a cam that will be friendly with the FI and yet make more low end torque.

Later tonight when i get home i could give you my recommendation.

When you call Comp ask them about their XFI cams. You have to be careful because of the FI but the XFI cams are designed for FI and make lots of torque.

Heres what he recommended:

I was looking into this cam http://www.holley.com/60102LK.asp It seems like a mild came and good with automatic tranys. But I don't really know much. Just another option for ya.

Thanks, VooDoo seems to be pretty popular.

Suggest reading this page at TBI Chips. Some good info in there for you.

Thanks, ive been checking that out. Good stuff:waytogo:.

Less valve overlap is better for low-end torque, afaik. more overlap works well for HP in high-rpm motor since it helps keep the gasses moving out of the combustion chamber faster.

IMO if you go with the comp XE249. Get better than stock exhaust. Headers and a good free flowing exhaust will give you the most out of that cam. Also Get the recomended springs for that cam. I do not advise using stock TBI head springs. They are weak and can start floating in the mid-high 4K RPM with a higher than stock lift cam.
You should also get an adjustable fuel pressure regulator so you can fine tune the fuel pressure to the new fuel needs for your engine.
Beings you have TBIchips web site you may want to get a chip burned for that cam. It will work with the stock chip Ok. But a custom chip will help you get the most out of it.
Might as well throw on an Edelbrock intake manifold too while you have things apart.

If you want to keep things more on the stock side look into a Comp 252BH cam it is a good replacement for the stock cam in a stock engine. It is a great towing cam and wont hurt your gas MPG. Works fine with the stock chip.

When did chevy truck engines switch to hydraulic roller cams?
Trucks got roller cams in 1996 when they switched to Vortec. But the eariler TBI blocks are drilled and tapped for the Lifter retainers/guides. So it is a fairly easy swap to install a roller cam in them.

If you are using that cam with 1.6 to one rockers. Definatly replace your stock Valve springs with performance springs.
Re ultimate TB mods.
I have not modified a TB that way. But I do have a bored out to 46mm stock TB it flows aprox 590 CFM. I like it. Just right for a 350.

Thanks for the advice:D.
Im looking into the Edel. intake.
Exhaust man. has busted studs (tryed like hell not to:doah:) so I do see something else replacing them $$$$. Exhaust y's to single 3" no cat w/Flowmaster. Seems like all its missing is headers?
Asked them about the springs (Summit) and was told I didnt need:confused:. My heads are rebuilt if that matters although springs are still "stock".

Will look at the fuel regulator.

I agree on the chip for sure. I made the mistake of getting a chip for a bmw I have thinking I was done with the mods. I wasnt of course, and ended up chipping twice. This has just grown into much more than planned (as if theres another way:haha:) and I want to have all ducks in a row before chipping.
I have a blazer project that im supposed to be soaking my money in, and am, but the burb is just supposed to gas and go. Gotta button this up and focus on the blazer.
Thanks again,
Dustin

As long as you are doing it, why not a roller cam? Prolly more money, but theoretically more performance. Donno how much more though.

Not even close to worth the cost, unless you've got a factory block all set up for it, and can get the components used/cheap.
