With this '88 Blazer I have a stock 350. I would like to do a top end rebuild because of smoke on start up and oil consumption. With all the "towing" camshafts availiable what would be recommended? And would the TBI or any other component have to be altered to accept a different cam?

I think that you have the hydrolic roller cam. Replacement cams for these are around $240 without lifters. Comp Cams and Crane Cams make stuff designed for your engine. Give both a call and ask which one to use.

An '88 won't have a factory roller cam. (Unless it's a 6.2L diesel). The 350's used a flat tappet cam.

If you got smoke on startup, a top end rebuild won´t solve it I´m afraid
. Smoke on startup usually indicates worn valvestem seals. If it´s smoking all the time you need to hone (and possibly bore) the cylinders and get new rings.

I thought they changed in '87 (when they went to a 1-piece rear main seal). What year did they change?

What ever kind of cam you have make sure that its one designed for a motor with TBI.

I just replace my intake and cam on my '90 Jimmy. The cam is a flat tappet cam. I used the Edlebrock intake and cam combo. The cam is a very mild and does a good job of low end torque and really improved the power throught the entire range. The cam and intake are designed to work on a TBI engine without changing the chip.

They put roller cams in the 'vette engine starting in '87. But the trucks kept the flat tappet cams. At least that's what the GM factory service manual shows. The 4.3 V6 got a roller, but the 350 didn't. Even the factory service manual for my '94 Suburban says it has a flat tappet cam.

Smoke at start up is usually caused by bad valve seals. These seal only cost about $10 and can be changed with some tools and air pressure.
