It's an upright, but not an 8274. Is it a bellvue? I haven't been on this earth long enough to recognize a winch like this. Anyone know what it's rated at, or if it's worth a darn?

its a belue or waren they were made by both, it is the father of the 8724 and a good winch, its main draw back is there is no power out

Thanks, good to know. I can't figure out the brake though, I think it's busted. That metal strapping that's wrapped around the drum isn't connected to anything on one end. The lever just flops around at the end of the strap. It just draws juice too, don't spin. Pulled the motor apart and the armature has a big wire ripped off and poking out. Don't know if I can fix it.

Belleview, is the company, and was bought out by Warn lo these many years ago.

As mentioned, it is the grandfather of the venerable 8274 and differs primarily in having no power out. You get your exercise that way =))

For the motor, take it to a local place that does starters and alternators. I had the motor for my Ramsey rebuilt by my local guy, cost me $80, IIRC.

Hmm, I was just pondering if I could mod it to power out. Just gotta take the output of the armature and make a terminal for it on the case, then another for the input to the field coils....

Or I wonder if I could fit the motor from a 8274 on there....
Either way, I didn't really want to spend much on this thing. Just acquired it for free kind of, it was sitting in the back of a parts truck I got. Guy said it was a PTO winch. :haha:

Anyone know what those screws surrounding the brake drum are supposed to do? They're just kinda pointing at that strapping saying "I'm not touching you." :dunno:

Thanks for the links. Good to see a picture of what an operational one should look like. Leaves me wondering though... What is that black lining between the brake drum and the brake banding? Is it some sort of friction material? Is it part of the band or the drum, or neither? Mine doesn't have that.

its a warn 5721 i think (can't remember the number on the top of my head) fairly old, cable operated, that lining your talking about is what it uses for the brake, it being loose is fine just as long as it stays in there.

Well there is no lining. I was asking if the lining is supposed to be part of the band or the drum. I don't know what replacement part to order otherwise...

not sure what it is exactly but i do know with mine it's not attached to either peice just sorta laying in there.

Huh, just laying in there then. That's weird. I wonder where I can get that piece. It probably just got thrown away or lost somewhere. When I got the parts truck there was all kinds of junk in the back, and that brake band was disconnected at one end, kinda bent up and flopping about. Who knows where the friction liner went.
