Could I safely tow an 81 Chevy sortbox pickup using a car dolly type trailer using my 2005 Grand Caravan with a class II hitch? Thanks in advance.

I pulled a '68 El Camino from Tucson,AZ to Phoenix using my '88 IROC Camaro once, I believe it was a class 2 hitch, had the smaller square receiver. Worked fine,,, the tow dolly doesn't really put any weight on the hitch, just enough to keep it down,, it's all on the wheels for the most part,, just all dragging weight.

Tucson to Phoenix is about 140 miles or so.

I'd only be towing it a total of 60 miles. I just want to make sure it's safe and that they'll even rent me one. Would I have to remove the rear driveshaft? I tow a 2 place ATV trailer with 2 quads all the time but not sure about the shortbox.

I'm not going to condemn you for you may or may not do.
AND, I want to go on record as stating that I hate the fact that we live in a "what if" world. I myself do not live in a what if world, I just do what I think i need to do, and press on.

If there happens to be some kind of a problem, even someone else crashing into you or your stuff, and that hitch and/or anything concerning that hitch causes anyone any loss or damage. you may be personally responsible. Your insurance will refuse to pay for any of it if it can be proven that you knew of the issues involving that trailer and that hitch. Hell, even if it cannot be proven. Insurance companies pretty much do what ever they want, with you or without you.
Not to mention you could be found criminally liable for it also. Thats a long row to hoe.
If it was just a couple of miles, I'd do it without a second thought. If it's across town, I'd call a wrecker to come get it. As cheap as towing is any more, there are a dozen different towing companies competing for your towing $$$$.

I am also the same guy that towed a 74 blazer with a tow strap 52 miles on a major highway, just because.
So, what do I know? Not much, just don't want to see a guy get into a bunch of **** over trying to move a vehicle inexpensively.

Moving it would be no big deal. It is the sudden stop when the idiot pulls out in front of you that would do you in. I have seen those hitches fold under the car. Find a buddy with a truck.

That is why I got me AAA premium, I pay $139 a year for me and the wife and each one gets up to 4 tows a year, including one up to 200 miles and 3 up to 100 miles each.
I have done some really crazy **** in my days but now with this alternative I never hesitate to call.
I usually use them at least 2-3 times a year, last year I did 6 times.
It more than pays for itself.
I never used them for emergency, always to move my junk around.:D
I have towed a big body mercedes with a tow strap behind my Renault 5 le car, but it was flat ground and only about 20 miles.:eek1:

I'm guessing the truck isn't roadworthy/running? If it is, just tow the dolly to the truck and then tow the van back with the truck!

I wouldn't personally run that combo more than a few miles. I wouldn't even want to pull that much weight behind my 2500HD without trailer brakes, and having it on a dolly just makes it worse. A buddy in our club pulls his little Sami (no signficiant addtional weight besides for 30" tires) for 10 years behind an older Tacoma using a dolly and he won't go over about 50 mph, and wound up in the ditch after it started swaying on him. In his case the tow rig is heavier than the vehicle being towed, however I doubt that would be the case in your situation.
