Being the bright young man I am, I've decided that I need a couple of things on the blazer before I take about a 2 and a half hour road trip for the 4th... I've decided to try to do them the night before I leave... I'm so smart.

I'm almost done with my winch controls so that's not an issue... the things I need to get done are replace the input and both output transfer case seals, and install a transcooler... Can I do that all in one night?

I'm going to do the transfercase seals first, because I think that's the biggest problem. The input seal is leaking so fluid from the trans is leaking into the transfercase, filling up, and creating pressure so it leaks out both output seals...

I've pulled the transfercase before so that shouldn't be a problem, but I've never replaced the input and front output seals, how time consuming is this? Any tips, what's the fastest way to do it?

As far as the transcooler goes, for now I'm just going to run soft lines, but I need to know which one is the pressure line and which is the return... I've seen it answered before but I don't have time to dig... I need to start now! I think I can make some brackets pretty fast, and I'm just going to use a brass 90* fitting off the radiator cooler. (I know it's not the best way but I'm in a hurry...)

I'm going to finish the winch controls right now, I'll come back in to see if any one had any advice for me, thanks guys!
 
I did my transfer case seals in about 3 hours total time. The front seal is a steel and rubber setup that is a total pain. Make sure you have a good seal puller, the front edge of the seal is rubber and the rear is steel, so you have to hook the back of the seal and then pull it out. Rear seal is cake. The input seal is time consuming because of pulling the t-case out to do it. Once it is out it should be pretty easy to replace the seal.
 
Maybe do the output seals first then drop the case for the input seal. It will be easier to get the nut off the front output without having to hold the case. Just a thought.
 
Got my winch controls wired up... the panel is definately redneck fabolicious.... :haha:

Awesome guys, thanks, I'll do the outputs before pulling the case, and luckily I have a seal puller I picked up a little while ago to do my axles. Now I'm debating on doing the cooler now or just wait till I get back... or I could do it tomorrow... I'm not leaving till 2 but I don't really want to go pick one up... plus I'm afraid I'll forget to get something... and they'll be closed... So I might just tackle the case seals tonight...
 
I will say that when I did mine, the front output flange slid right off without the BFH. I was really suprised, but when I saw the seal I realized it wasn't doing anything to actually seal the case.
 
I've got to ask, are you taking the K5 on said roadtrip where it all needs to be back together? If not, get started on it. If so, wait on the cooler (can't afford problems) and just do the seals.:wink1:

A little mud riding, lots of drinking, staying in a cabin for the night with about 20 friends, and drinking on the lake on the 4th, it'll be great!

If your gunna run in the mud id definately do the trans cooler. Mud is tough on trans. It works your truck hard and builds heat fast. Take the extra time now rather than toast the trans.

Here's a pic of the switches and one of the winch... it's not pretty... but it'll work. I lost my controller like 2 months ago, and believe me, you get spoiled using a winch... :haha:

The P.O. of the winch had already wired the winch with a 3-prong house plug, so I left it, just replaced the wiring, but it works surprisingly well. And when I get another controller, if I ever need to stand back further, I can just plug an extension cord in! :haha: That's the plug draped over the top hanging behind the winch. Kinda hard to see.

Well not tonight... I'm not sure I have the right seals... Or something... I'm tired... I'll either figure it out tomorrow or just take the pathfinder. :( Say a little prayer for me... :wink1:
 
Yeah the blazer isn't going. :( I almost wanted to say "I wish I had just left it alone until I got back" but then I found that one of my trans mount bolts was completely gone and the other one was backed out about half way. :eek1:

The bolt that holds the detent cable cover to the trans is stripped out and I need to run my breather lines up to the engine bay... I got under there and just kept finding stuff... I hate all the small things that hold you up... It slows down progress so much, and makes me want to take a nap... :haha: but this has made me want to spend more time in the shop, so after the 4th I should get alot done.

My buddy is going to drive... I'll still take pics and post them up in the lounge! Happy Independence day everyone!

Is it possible or ok to put the trans and t-case hoses together with a T and run one line into the engine bay?

If you were going to do that, make sure that the end after the T is larger than the two leading in. This will help prevent a backpressure, I know that there isn't a lot of pressure on the vents, but they are what keeps your system alive. Just something to think about.

Also make sure both cases are useing the same type of fluid. I cant remember if mine do , but its a th350/203. Im to lazy to go find the book and look it up ;)
 
Yes that would be a problem with mine. 350 with auto fluid and 205 with gear oil. At least I think it's gear oil. Hard to tell, it was so black. But now it has new fluid and no leaks so I am happy.
