Can I get that thing in my k5?

Two things to watch for with that turbo setup:

1. It will not fit if you have air conditioning in your truck. The turbo sits right where the AC condensor sits right now.

2. You may need to do some mild grinding on your passenger's side frame rail to clear the exhaust manifold bolts

@Russel:

thanks a lot for your infos. how much HP do you think does this engine produce? I'm worried about my 10 bolts...

What do you think about a cheaper, non-turboed version of that engine? These guys could sell me one for about 4500 $, maybe I once could add a banks kit to that engine.

I'm really thinking about getting a engine from these 6.5l guys. I'm able to sell my old engines and parts over here for roughly 3000Euros which are about 4500 $.

As alternative, Icould have my old red block 6.2 overhauled with new heads, but that would be quite expensive (plus a lot of time to get all the necessary parts)

(shipping also is not such a big deal, 500$ from USA to Germany)

I do not know what to do right now, but I really think that a 6.5-drop-in would be a tremendous upgrade for my k5. I want to keep the truck for a long time, I really love the 73-91 C/K trucks, I had some other, older 4x4s the last years but I really love my K5 (Ok, over all it is just a car ;-)

Do yourself a favor. If your considering a 6.2 for that much money either A go find a junker and rebuild it, you'll come out way ahead of $4500 :eek1: or Invest the money in a more compact, and arguable more reliable and loved 4bt.

And btw DONT BUY AND ENGINE OFF EBAY

No offense, but what exactly do you know about the AMG block 6.5? Were you aware of all the upgrades and improvements? How about that they are available in Marine apps at 400+ hp? This isn't an auction for a used old school 6.2 with a 6.5 turbo added...

You should see the improved bottom end on those engines

Add to that the redline is way higher than a 4BT or 6BT could ever dream of. R's are a good thing.

I recently drove a new Dodge with the 24 valve Cummins and was thoroughly underwhelmed. Didn't get to be any fun until my foot was well past 1/2 throttle. I'm used to my 6.2 which has way more off idle snap at light/part throttle.

If I had the cash I'd buy that listed 6.5 in a heartbeat...

Unless you are running your truck offroad -- Don't worry about the 10 bolts until they break :)

N/A these engines are not bad at all, at least I didn't mind the power mine offered. If the non-turbo updated 6.5L engines are significantly cheaper, you can always install a banks turbo kit which would fit in your truck WAY better.

@Russel & all:

thanks -like always- a lot for your help!
I think I have to go to the dieselplace forum to find out more about that stuff.

Do you know any trustworthy shop on the internet? I know kennedydiesel, 6.5l.com (= the ebay guys). Unfortunately they did not answer my last emails (well, if they do not like to make some $ I can't help them)

I did some math and it really seems that a new engine is affordable. Selling my surplus parts over here would bring me roughly $4500 - $5000 . I think for that much money I'd be able to get me a nice 6.5 ;-) :D

Please let me know what you think, there are almost all parts I'd need for a gm turbo conversion available at ebay (complete exhaust mainfold & intake set and so on)

What would be a nice, mechanical IP for such a AMG/conversion engine and how much HP can I squeeze out of a non-turboed 6.5 ?

Thanks a lot and greetings

Flo

Supercharger will run you $4400 and you can keep the A/C. It will give you solid PSI through all RPMs.

Advantages over turbocharging
1. Easier Installation
2. Less Underhood Heat
3. Cylinder head is prone to stress cracks with turbocharger
4. Left or right side Air cleaner
5. Change the pulley to get different PSI.

Where do you get a bolt on kit to supercharge a 6.2L?

#3 above is flat-out bull$hit.

Turbo advantages:

1. Cheaper
2. Greater boost available
3. Much more efficient, especially at higher boost, which means lower charge air temps.
4. Simpler to intercool
5. Since it uses waste heat in the exhaust to drive it AND it has higher efficiency, it gives better MPG.
6. Since it doesn't rob crankshaft HP to drive, more HP is available at the flywheel.
7. Did I mention it is cheaper?

well,

nice idea concerning the supercharger, but just too much $$$

How much would a turbo conversion cost me?
The mainfolds & crossoverpipe is a steal on ebay.com (all 3 mainfolds for about $ 250)

Here'S a pic of a trubo set for 3k from ssdieselsupply. If you consider $ 300 for the mainfolds and downpipe, you just need the turbo and smaller parts for a complete set. Don't know which turbo to choose at all & how much $ for a good turbo? On ebay.com is a guy who'S offering a set : new turbo and new mainfolds for about $ 1200..

It's 4K. That only a few hundred less than a supercharger. And a supercharger is easier to install.
