I'm getting ready to pull a motor and trans out of an '89 Blazer. Can I pull them both as one single unit, or will I have to seperate them? I am using a chain hoist in a garage that has about 12 feet of clearance?

It will be way easier to seperate them. Does the trans need to come out for some reason? If not then leave it and the T-case hanging there. It will balance very nicely.

Thanx guys. I do need the trans also though. Workin a trade with a guy. I need a 700r4 trans (mine's wasted). was looking to do this on the cheap. The guy needs his motor pulled. I pull the motor and he's giving me the trans for free.

As long as you remove the transfer case, you can pull them both at the same time. You really need an engine leveler if your doing it by yourself though. It will help you get the angle needed to pull them both together.

it dependes if your rig is lifted or not???if its stock then it could be done real easy if its lifted your going to need an engine hoist that wil clear the lift and stil be able to pull the engine out

I pull my tires off and use small stands that keep the rotors about 1 inch off the ground. That gives me enough clearance to pull mine. Still couldn't do the engine trans combo with as much lift as I have though without using an A frame hoist.

Factory proceedure is; engine out the front, trans out from under.
I use a tranny jack under the trans, and a floor jack under the T-case.

I have pulled engine and trans many times. On both my K5 and Suburban. That was with a SM465 trans in both of them. It JUST fits, but it fits. Biggest problem is the pinchweld along the firewall, it snags the adapter on the transmission a couple of times.

I don't have an adjustable hoist point, but I wish I did. Would make it a lot easier. I will probably drop in my 383 and 4l80E as a unit as well. its easier to do the bellhousing stuff out of the rig. But that truck will have the front clip removed(lifted way too big to even remove the engine alone).

if its sitting on anything ove 37" its best to remove the front clip.i have a 454 on my 73 k5.i removed the front clip to install it because im sitting on 44"boggers.now i plan to install a duramax diesel.how many times did i wish for an adjustable hoist finally my big bro bought one. after we used it to install a 400 combo on his toyota landcruiser i went and bought myself one.do you know how i can download picks of my rig on this web sight????

There are four big bolts on the back of the bellhousing that hold the tranny on. Then four bolts on the crossmember and the driveshaft bolts. Drop the tranny and transfer case out the bottom with the crossmember attached and see if the dude will throw in the transfer case too. Removing the transfer case from the tranny can be a real bear in the truck. And a SM465 is heavy especially when you are already fighting the weight of the engine. I don't know about a 700R4 though.
