can I put a 12" lift on a K5 with a 305?

You can upgrade to a 350 in ca. You can't "upgrade" to a smaller motor, like to a 5.3 from a 350. But 305-350 works.

You just need to swap ALL smog related components with the new motor.

Truthfully, for something of that vintage...as long as it looks factory and no smog parts are clearly missing, you will be fine. Newer motors have to hook up to the diagnostic port to smog, but not with the old OBDI interface.

That being said, everyone else is on the right track . Don't go that huge, unless its just for looks.

Im running 12" superlift springs with 3" body on tons with 44"s. It can be done but I will say not cheap. Alot of things need addressed when running that much lift. Here is my build if youd like to look through for reference http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=302166

IMO I would not want to daily drive my truck on the street or take it wheeling on trails. My truck is only being built for sand and possibly some mud. 12" lift springs do not articulate and do not ride well. From the sounds of what your wanting a smaller lift and tire will be better. But in the end its your truck and do what you want to do to it.

If you decide to go big and have questions dont be afraid to ask ill do my best to help. Need some more monster trucks on this site :thumb:

Helllloooo, You don't need to look too far from home for local help. There are at least two other active CK5ers relatively close to you. If you are ever in Bakersfield I am quite sure that Munepit (Jeff) or I can get together with you to answer questions or I am sure Jeff would love to show you his Suburban.

Jeff has done most all the projects you are looking to do to his Suburban very successfully.

I do spend some time in Cuyama, so maybe I can make it down your way to see if I can help.

P.M. me for more info.

From my experience with that much lift on a K5 be ready for the headaches, thinning wallet, and all night sitting up reading things on the internet about lifting a blazer that much. I did all of the above and decided to go for it but I did things a little different than just throwing some 12" springs on there. I used 8" springs, E-Z inches, longer shackles and dropping the front spring hangers down etc. to get that amount of lift. All of which was not cheap I might add...

I also used to daily drive my K5 to work which was only 12 miles round trip but after I put it up in the air and threw 44'' tires on it, it was WAY too hard on components to be a DD. bushings, U-joints, pinion seals, brakes, everything was getting overworked and just wasn't cutting it anymore. Not to mention the extra expense of getting 1 tons, regearing, crossover steer, custom driveshafts, all the things to make it work right being lifted that much for a DD was a nightmare.

Do I look back and regret lifting it that much now? No. I built the truck for mudbogs. I love what my truck has become and can't wait to continue building it. But one that high for a daily driver IMHO is a horrible idea. Also, a truck like that really isn't the best idea for a teenager. They don't drive well at all, they road walk, takes as much distance to stop as a train, and when the wind picks up your driving a brick wall...

I am not trying to scare you out of going this route, just letting you know that is ins't just a plug and play lift by any means.

44's on 10b balljoints DDing? I give it 6 months....

6 weeks for the axles if the kid likes to flog the pedal... :haha:

You sir were right on point! Balljoints before swapping to a D60, I made it January to the middle of May... 5 1/2 months.

carrier pin in the 12 bolt mauled to the point where we broke the carrier getting it out, then once that headache was gone the axle shaft splines twisted...

Glad you found a fun project to do with your son.

You should have no smog problems swaping in a 350ci as long as you keep all your smog equipment stock-ish. a) the smog check will not notice that it is a 350, b) I do believe that it is legal to swap to a bigger replacement motor especially as the 350 did come in the K5.
Look into doing a 5.3 or 6.0 LS swap.

And I agree with everyone here about the 12" lift.

hope not... in our own nudge nudge kinda way, we're just trying to prevent him from giving himself a nightmare...

throw good money out for 44's, the lift ain't cheap, than ya find out shafts to make it even go down the road could cost more than ya paid for the truck.... :doah:

we all know a tall truck can be done right, but it can take a fair amount of coin, and more importantly knowledge and planning...

Where were all of you guys when I decided to lift my truck this big. Wish you guys would have talked me out of it. :haha: No turning back now.

I tried to tell you some in your thread . and I don't recall this kind of question from you . :dunno:

and someone here had to do it :haha:

After you took a 4 speed out for an automatic, I knew there was no talking sense to you.
