Can i put a 5 speed automatic transmission ina 1990 Suburban V1500 4x4 in place of a 700r4?

I am not a big fan of the 6spd in my wife's Cadillac Escalade. It tries everything to keep the RPM's of that sweet 6.2 down super low and out of it's power band. I can be doing 35mph and it wants to upshift all the way to 6th gear and 1100rpm. It has to down shift 3 times just to get into a gear where it has some power to go from 35-40mph. I also don't like the way they act coming out of the hole. 1st gear, then a quick up shift into 2nd. I prefer a 4L60E that lets it rev pretty hard even with jjust moderate throttle position, going into 2nd.

Thats why I always say the Allison 1000 is the only auto ive ever liked. The programming is top notched and geared towards making the truck work, not towards "how fast can I get into 6th gear!?"

Actually the tv cable problem was on the other suburban(1990 GMC R1500 350).

Not the suburban(v1500) I have now which the trans was rebuilt

TV cable is not a part of the transmission, and rebuilding the tranny does not mean that it is currently set correctly. But it does control the hydraulic pressure inside the tranny, so if it has gotten out of adjustment, the clutches may not be getting adequate pressure to fully engage. This is a recipe for a burned-up brand-new rebuilt tranny. So if you don't wanna re-rebuild your tranny, it is worth your time to check the adjustment. And definitely ask if you want detailed instructions (I didn't understand TV cables either until I had to deal with mine). They're self-adjusting, so it's a pretty simple thing.

If you want an extra gear for MPG, you'll never get your money back after doing the conversion. People like to brag about high MPG numbers, but in the big picture gas is still really cheap compared to buying a new car or swapping drivetrains. Your driving habits will have a bigger impact than moving from a 4-speed to 5-speed.

If you want fuel economy, why are you trying to squeeze it out of an early 90s square body with the aerodynamics of a brick? Go buy a Geo Metro and get 50 mpg with it.
