Can I repair my truck for $3500, or should I just buy another one?

what Russ said.... every seam in that truck is gonna be ready to pop from rust.. you can even see it where the rear floor steps down..... unless you have the bodywork tools, knowledge and are a masochist, find a new rig as has been suggested....

Yeah, I think I will get rid of it.

Now to find a clean one. FWIW, I'm looking for a white on gray (or blue if I have to) 90 or 91 that is all stock. I'd prefer tinted glass and sliding rear windows. I keep finding them on CL but the sellers never get back to me, so I presume they are sold but never deleted the ad!

I live in Fresno so if you find any on craiglist near me I would be happy to help and do an inspection for you

Thanks for the offer. I've found one in TN and one in MI. The guy in MI is sending me pics, and I have yet to get through to the TN guy.

There are lots of trucks appearing every day, that's for sure!

be VERY leary of people claiming their trucks are rustfree... as you know, lots of clueless people out there... a pic of the outside does you nothing.... closeups of the tailpan, seatbelt area, inside rockers, etc is what you want...

:waytogo:
mines rust free though
:haha:ok ok, it has surface rust where paint is missing

heck you could steal a CA truck, with smog, and never have to deal with smog. You suck, I don't like this idea anymore. You can't have one :deal:

Oh yeah, I've seen plenty of that. Of the 4 trucks I have looked at, which all four sellers have stated the trucks are rust free, only one actually was. (BTW, it's on Craigslist in Hickory, NC for $2500. It needs a little wrenching but otherwise would be a darn good truck. I'm just not down for any wrenching.) All the others had penetrating rust through the floor pans, etc., and I am not that dumb.

Any more.

I learned my lesson on my current Blazer. :doah: :haha:

yea cali smog regs make old stock factor rigs a pain in the ass. Istay away for anything in the 80's cause all the smog vacum tube with plasticfitings that desinagrate if you look at them wrong. So that why i got a 74 blazer one because the are coller with true full convert and i can give cali the finger on smoging it

So I found another nice one. $2500 and looks pretty clean. 1991 and is white on gray, exactly what I am looking for. Buyer says there is no rust, but will send pics. I tell him exactly how to lift the rear kick panel carpet and look for rust. He calls back ... and tells me there is a fist-sized hole through the body. :doah::(

The search continues.

HA HA! I laughed out loud on that one!

I had similar rust issues, but mine was all interior. I bought sheet metal (15 and 22 ga) and welded in bunches of new custom fabbed patch panels, the welder was an Eastwood MIG 135, you can get one for $299 and free ship off Egay.

As far as the rest goes (seals, headliner, carpet, etc) LMC truck pretty much has you covered.

The more you do on the shoestring and do yourself, the cheaper it will be.

Dont get your hopes up about a quick fix though, I worked on my WarWagon for 2 months before it was street worthy.

Are you set on a Blazer or would you go for a Suburban? I know of 2 Suburbans here on a couple different car lots that look to be in great shape. One's a 1980, (old style grill with square headlights) and the other is an 89-91.

The 80 is, I believe, a 3/4 ton and has what looks like about a 2" lift with a winch on the front, tailgate instead of barn doors and good blue/gray paint, (that would be popular in Virginia :haha:). The other one I just noticed a few days ago but it's black/gray and a 1/2 ton. Here in Montana, they don't salt the roads so we don't have rust issues. If you're interested, I could take a look for ya if you want.

Thanks for the tips. I don't think I'll be out welding any time soon, I'm sure I would just screw things up.

I am really, really interested in a 1990 or 1991 Blazer, white on gray/tan, with less than 100k miles. Something not abused either. I think I will just have to be patient.

We need to have a finders club here so people can hook each other up!
