the manual guts of a tailgate into a tailgate with the electrical crap? i like the manual much better, but my gate is really going down hill... electrics are easier to find.

Seeing as I put electrics into a manual, I would presume the other way would work as well.
And yeah, the manual is just simpler. Though on my '74 I just went without the damn thing altogether anyway
