you need to compress the spring that is behind it to get the snap ring that holds it off. you can get the lock plate compressor at autozone.

Little circlip around shaft.
Small screwdrivers and cover with rag when about to pop off so you don't lose the little bugger.

Push in on it and there is a lock ring in the center around the steering shaft. That plate has tension on it from the spring and the lock holds it all together. I made a puller but you can buy them from the parts store. Makes it alot easier.

As has been mentioned, go buy the lock plate compressor tool. $10 at any major auto parts store, and WELL worth it. Removing the plate isn't that tough, installing it by hand sucks.
alright guys, i got the plate dealy, 20 bux removed it, couldent get any further and didnt want to mess anything up for they day, so i started putting everything back togeather and when i was pulling my steering wheel back on the car decied to go into gear. parking break didnt do a dam thing, blazer rolls down steep driveway into the back of sisters care while i try to stop it and nearly get run over in the process. ankle is sprained, steeringwheel is still broken, sisters 4runner is smashed.

No offense, but those of you who don't use your ebrake, pay attention. (yeah right, we'll just keep using the transmission and expect that to never fail us) Don't care where you live, or what you are doing, things like this can and do happen as evidenced here, and there is NO reason for the ebrake to not be used.
I'm really not much for crazy safety rules and such, but it's not hard to use the ebrake. I hate seeing vehicles damaged for something as simple as not using the ebrake. (or not making sure it at least works, then when you need it, like the brakes fail, it doesn't work)

Were you pulling the tilt apart to try to get the slop taken out? If so it was probably more than what you were prepared for - there is another specialty tool you would need and the instructions for how to do it (so it doesn't happen again )

i knew what i was getting into and i had my haynes manual along the way to help me. my parents kept buggin me about fixing it so when i finally started to morethings happen. they took it to the the dealship while my ankle slowly stops swelling.

oh boy... i can only imagine what the stealership is gonna charge to tighten and loctite the 4 bolts it takes to fix a wobbly column. i can do it in about 15 minutes. (the right tools help immensely- $20 lock plate compressor, and a $20 Snap-On pivot pin puller)
