I have seen this. I don’t know the terminology of the set up. And I am intrigued. What’s it called?

All regarding the vertical axles.
What is attached to the pinion?
What is this set up best used for?
Is there a benefit at all?

I just feel dumb staring at it. Make me less dumb please.

If this is in the wrong section I apologize in advance.

Are you speaking directly about the axle and the pinion input angle?

Those axle are Rockwells

Yes, those. Ahh, I have heard that before. Thanks for that. They look awesome and expensive lol

What I’ve gathered so far

only available in 6.72 ratio
So that means giant tires in order to get any speed.

Probably won’t clear engine for front axle so massive lift needed as well.

Very cool though. Just not for me then.

I can’t remember who it is but there’s a company that makes a lot of upgrades for 2.5 tons one of which is 4.10’s.

Overall width can be an issue so some folks turn the wheel hubs around to pull the wheel mounting surface inward some.

These come with massive drum brakes that are usually removed for weight. A pinion brake set up is cheap and easy but you’d need wheel brakes to keep the DOT happy (bent’s pic shows available disc conversion).

Found it - Ouverson USA makes 4.90 gears plus a pile of other upgrades.

There is a gmt400 for sale on north Kiowa, I think.

Tall enough now I could use those little Rockwell's. Looks like it might have 44s under it

meh! I always heard they were big and heavy, but at least they are big and heavy.

the Unimog axles are reeeeeeally cool.

I always wanted to find Volvo portal axles and put them under my scout or my Landcruiser. insane clearance and gearing without needing a massive lift or ending up too wide for one lane of traffic. But, now that im a little older, i am calming down a little- still want cool stuff, but mostly just want a new pair of hooters that doesn't talk too much

Debraked rocks are tipping the scales right near built tons. It's almost worth it for 44+.

Next best is a super kingpin 14 bolt front. Which is right about the same weight as a lightened steer rockwell.

and the axle shafts and u-joints from a 60 to a 2.5ton rockwell are not much bigger .

so if me put your money in good aftermarket 60/14ff parts and enjoy more off the shelf parts over the 2.5 tons unless you need to be on 44" + tires or ag tires and need top loaders .

early 2.5 ton used non u-joint axles over later versions so watch for this .

some guys will grab a 2nd short side axle setup and then cut and narrow the long side down to the narrow width to help stuff them under the truck .

and i always was under the impression they were worm gear on top and ring and pinion on the lower end . kind of like a double gear setup .
