these were getting scraped so i took them. he said they are around 91 92 6.2 diesels.

i got these numbers on the back of the block. just below where the heads are

h148 other side 12555506

other one:
c235 other side 12552929

any ideas? thanks

Just took a look at mine, it's a 6.5, and no numbers where you describe. In the area that is covered by the bell housing is the number 599 which is a model, series, or casting # for the block.

huh ok, i will look and see if i got the right numbers i got more 65.5s?

The first set of numbers are manufacturing dates:
H is august with A being January.
14 is the the day of the month
8 is the last digit of the year, in this case 88 if it's a 6.2
so it's built:
August 14 1988
The other engine is built:
March 23 1985

The other numbers are serial casting numbers for the blocks, and from the numbers there is about 2500 engine built between 85 and 88:D

ok thanks, how can i tell if they are 6.2s or 6.5s?

Well I assumed they were 6.2, if they are 6.5 the dates would be the same but the years would be 95 and 98 respectively.
Do you have a pic of the engines, I believe you can tell visually.
Also I think the passenger side on the block there should be the size cast in it???

I know for a fact the the 929 block is a 6.5. I have a 6.5 block sitting in my garage waiting for a rebuild with that exact casting number. Believe it came out of early 92-98 truck. Kinda thinking the 506 block is a 6.5 also. But don't quote me on that. I got my block from a machine shop that was going out of business several years ago. He let me look at his books and I swear the 506 was listed as a 6.5.

Found some more verification on another site.

The only positive way to identify the engine is by block casting number because the injection systems can be interchanged, too. To verify 6.5 liter vs. 6.2 Liter applications, locate the casting number on rear driver's side of the block above flywheel housing. The following is an all-inclusive list of 6.5 liter block casting numbers: 10149599, 12552929, 10237141, 12555506.

nice thanks

That means they are 95 and 98 respectively:D
The problem with the Date codes is that they don't put the second digit of the year only the first, so you need to know roughly what year it is then this will give you exact dates.:D

my friend works for gm. he looked at them real fast. said he will look at numbers at work and get back to me on them.

well, he says they are 6.5s from a hummer. kinda funny just sold two of them. one turns over one does not. guess i will tear it down and see
