i have an opperatuneity to get a pair of axles from an old pal, a dana 44 and a 12 bolt, can i do this swap fairly easily or is it gunna be a real bitch?

Easy to do, everything should bolt in with minimal hassle.

yeah, what shaggy said, very easy swap and a slight upgrade in strenght, plus by swapping both, you don't have to make sure the ratio of rear end you were looking for matches the front, assuming the 44/12 are a matched combo /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

yea you know me im all about the strenght /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif, just kidd'n, yea id like to upgrade for strength, and me and my dad are gunna go over and look them over tonighht, i will post the results when i get back. they came off a 79 /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif.

gm started the transition to the 10 bolt a couple of years before 79, so it is possible that it may not have a 44 but a 10 bolt, but then again anything is possible as we swap stuff around all the time, just make sure the ratio's match /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

79 is still in the range where you'll find 44s, 10 bolts were a little more common by then, but there are still alot of 79s out there that got the 44.

might be good if its a 10 bolt, i havent seen the axles yet, a dana 44 is suposed to be stronger isnt it?, and its 5:35 and my pop gets home useually around 8pm, like that ketchup commercial says Anticipation....... is making me late.....

hahaa NO!, now if i am to do this swap with the rear end, can i take the yoke off my 10 bolt and put it on the 12 bolt? to make it easier? or does anyone know the part number for the hybrid u-joint? and is the front drive shaft u-joint that mates to the front diff, is it gunna be differnt from a 10 bolt to a dana 44?

I don't think the yokes will swap between a 10-bolt and a 12-bolt, but the crossover u-joints aren't hard to find. What ratio are the new axles? Gonna get something lower than those 3.08's? /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

you can do this swap easily, but is it worth it? if your running small tires the axles you have should be fine. I have 36" swampers which is a pretty small tire, and I've broke 3 twelve bolts in a course of two months. if I was going through the hassle of swapping out axles i would look into a 14 bolt, which currently is what I'm doing myself, also from my understanding a 10 bolt is almost equal in stregth to a 44, except the housing tubes are a thinner wall, but me personally I would take that 44 over the 10 bolt, but if your not breaking the ten bolt wait and save up for a 60, what ever you do make sure your ratios match. good luck on the build!

oh yeah, I forgot to ask about the 465 and 208 combo, never seen it, did you do that or is that factory?

factory, the previous owner of my truck ordered the truck like that, go figure, i like it tho. turns out i cant use either axle, the 12 bolt is in fairly decent shape, its just the gears are wrong, and the front is a 10 bolt and the same ratio as mine, except it worse condition /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif, now i gotta go to a salvage yard again and look around, oh this is so much fun i think im gunna SCREAM /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif
