Can you put an 80s transfer case on a 90?

My 1990 needs a transfercase because mine is cracked. That causes the tranny to leak and not shift correctly or not at all. I found out someone I know is selling one off of an 87 or 88. The truck was a Suburban and had a Carb, not fuel injection if that matters. Also manual locking hubs like mine now has.

He says it's an NP208 and was on a Th700R4 tranny... same as mine.

Will this fit?

It's used and he said it's mine for $100 cash. Good deal? I've never replaced mine. Also the shop it's at said it's seven hours labor, I don't buy it, but I don't go that far when doing repairs so I don't know.

Thoughs, suggestions?

Thanks.

yea it should go in...

Seven hours? wow... Did you specify that you are only swapping transfer cases, and not transmissions>?

do it yourself. It really isnt that hard.

I might be mistaken, but your transfer case being cracked, should cause your transmission to leak, or have problems with shifting.

its 2.8 hours. 7 is to recondition it and R & R it.

Since your k5 is a 90 the np 208 case could work but speedo would be an issue so better off looking for the proper np241 with electronic speedo as with other case you will not have a working speedo and the 241 has a lower low range in 4low

Yup 1990 was the 1st year for electronic speedo. So If you can deal with having an inoperable speedo go for it. The difference in low range between the 208 and 241 is so small I bet you will never know the difference. Its like 2.72:1 vs. 2.6?:1 Oh and its gotta be a lot less then 7 hours to swap that in. Like someone said, I bet you could have it swapped in under 3

I replaced the input seal on my 241 in less than 2 hours. It's just two driveshafts, several bolts and shifter linkage.
