can you swap 73-up tail housing onto a 68-72 465 tranny?

anyone know if you can swap tailhousing from a 73-up 465 tranny over onto a 68-72 465 housing ?

reason why: 72 and older dont have tailhousing mount and rear crossmember setup like 73-up do, 72 and older mount crossmember under bellhousing; are known technically as rear engine mounts*

all i can find around are 72 and older 4 speed trannies , i cant gfind a single 73-up one and i want setup to convert my 81 2350 th350 over to 465, is a bitch to find a manual trans truck after 72, ive only seen three in my life and thats it, were all for parts /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
73- up manual trans are damn rare..

i really miss my 82 C20 pickup 305 465 daily drive,r im stupid for ridding of it /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif a 350 and headers and an FF 14 bolt would have fixed that 305 and 14 bolt SF truck right up..

To the best of my knowledge it will fit - but I have never tried it . I think that the figure eight adapter on the 4WD trucks is the same from pre 72 to post 73 so it would make sense that the rear cover would also interchange on the 2WD versions of the 465 .
P.S. I have a 1978 2WD 465 that I got for spare parts - PM me if you would like and we might be able to trade some parts .

That is wild.... Canada must have gotten all but three 73-up SM465 trucks /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Needless to say, they're everywhere. Never had to pay more that 50¢/lb /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yes, the tailhousings are interchangeable. My buddy wore out the SM465 in his '69. He got a '73-up version from me and successfully swapped the '69 tailhousing onto it.

73-up465are fricking hard as hell to find, exceptin 1ton duallies, but notverymany of them running around neither, i finally found oneafter 72 recently after hunting for years, its rustedout junk body and 350 bottom end busted, but damn i got it ! now for a body and a 350.. im gonna rescue it and put her back on the road, 4.10 gears and 16"all around and bed and hoist complete and good, but the body, hmm.. no floors at all and almost 100%gone rocker and both fenders and doors, junk scrap worse than swiss cheese, typical for around here, the cab isnt even attached to frame mounts up front, probably not front clip either.

oh well.. cant find any better, let alone another one like it.


the patternon the back of the cases all should be same through atleast 80, if not 88, just output shaft and output shaft housing differences for 68-72 and then 73-upand for 4x2 vs. 4x4 of course.
all should swap fine because all 465 cases are same casting and design.


anyone who can prove this right or wrong for sure 100% ?
