Cannot figure out this noise

You mean under heavier loads, someone is shaking a coffee can full or rocks?

How much timing does the engine have?
Someone asked me if it sounded like a can full of rocks and that had to be the best way to describe it to me. Gets louder under more load. I have no idea about timing or anything. I havent messed with anything like that since i got it. I know the truck had been through a few owners in the last 5 years or so.

¡Ay, caramba! Stay off the throttle until you get this figured out. You can get detonation from having carbon buildup in the engine or whatever, but usually it's too much timing. This is all controlled by the ECM, but it doesn't know the real crank position, only what the pick-up coil is telling it. Grab a timing light, unplug the timing connector and see what your base timing is.

I've never checked for detonation before. Will the spark plugs show signs of detonation?

Im hearing the sound between the back of the engine and the transmission. Any ideas? I cant think of anything that would make a noise like that. Turbo 350 transmission

Have you checked your converter bolts?
Going to check it when i get more time to. Checked my time and it was way advanced so i backed it off. Still getting a pinging though so i'm gonna play with it when i get some more time. I think i'm having two issues because i'm getting a pinging from the bell housing and a pinging that i can hear coming out of my exhaust tip when under load. The pinging in rhe trans is constant but gets louder with rpms so i'm gonna check fly wheel bolts

what fuel are you putting in it? cheap low octane gas and advanced timing will get you detonation...run a tank of super thru it with some over the counter octane booster and a can of fuel system cleaner/water remover..sitting and then running on an empty tank in winter will do it too..condensation gets in the tank and waters down your fuel, combine that with a tank full of cheap gas from a crappy station and your advanced timing..that could be the issue

That's a good way to know if it's real pinging. Higher octane will reduce or eliminate it.

I ran it to almost empty with 87 and then filled it up with 93 and that was before i changed the time so it still has 93 in it and still pinging. My buddy said i could try seafoam or something to clean out the engine. And i know i definitely need to do a full tuneup on it so i will be doing that soon

It pings less, or exactly the same on 93 as 87? Because real engine knock will reduce - that's the definition of octane.

It quieted down some slightly should i just set the time back a little more? Got new spark plugs to try until i get my taxes back to afford a full tuneup

That's how it's supposed to be set. Are your knock sensors and wires still in place?

Some wires have been cut from previous owner dont know what they went to though so i have no idea. Where would the knock sensor be? My truck ran fine when i first got it though

There's a knock sensor on each side of the block - kind of centered front to back. There is single wire running to each one.

While looking for the knock sensor i found another sensor with bare wire showing on it. Can anyone tell me what it is? And i found my knock sensor i guess i'll replace that next chance i get
