Hi guys, any thoughts on carrying a canoe? I'm looking at getting one, but I don't really want to drill holes in my top for a rack. And I don't have a rear receiver to come up off of that. Wouldn't it work just to put foam pads or some such on the roof front and back and cinch it down?

You could, but you might dent the roof when you cinch it down or when you hit a bump in the road. I’d try to get something fabbed up that mounts to the bumpers somehow. Or you might be able to get something that attaches to the drip rails for the front and the rear would just rest on the fiberglass top at it’s strongest point.
What’s the length and weight of it.

I haven't picked out the exact one yet, although I'm looking at the Mad River Journey 156, 15'6", 83 lbs.

83 isn’t super heavy, that’s an advantage

Yeah, not too bad. I also thought maybe getting that split foam pipe insulation and putting it along the gunwales (?) for transportation.

That's bitchin'. But a bit tricky with a Blazer, unless I take the top off every time I go.

That canoe is owned by my buddy with a first gen K5. He normally hauls it and it’s just strapped to his cage. However with a couple pool noodles slid over the edges of the canoe I’m sure you could haul it on the K5 top.

Thanks, that's what I was hoping for. The top of my truck barely clears my parking spot, so if I did a rack, I'd have to take it off every time I got home just to park. That would be a PITA.

There are rain gutter rack mounts that I’ve seen used on fiberglass toppers. I used to be a pretty serious whitewater paddler. I’ve seen a lot of caved in roofs from the open boats. 83lbs is fairly heavy, but nothing compared to 83lbs with 70 mph wind pressing it down. Make sure that the contact points are not in the unsupported roof areas.

Hmmm. Yeah, that's a good point. I don't have to go far, if I stick to Lake Mead. Just surface streets. But if I go down to Lake Mojave or Laughlin, that could be an issue.

That's exactly what I had, a Thule system. It attached to the gutters up front. Two brackets got mounted to the fiberglass top to use the same mounts in the rear. I usually left it on but it only took 2 minutes to remove the whole system, just untwist the locking knobs at all 4 mounting points.

I found these little foam things on Amazon that worked out really well for my truck. They were rubber on the bottom and stuck to the cab pretty good. I ran this setup throughout the 36 Hours of Uwharrie and the canoe didn't move much at all. The nice part is they weren't permanent and as long as the canoe was strapped tight it worked well.

i wish i had your "problems"...........sigh......

you can put a light bar rack that attaches to the drip rails and keep from denting the roof

Thanks for all the advice guys. I know I can put one on the front rain gutters, but the back concerned me. Plus I'd have to take the gutter ones off every time I got home just to park in my spot. I'll do some pondering of my options here.
