I have a 465 in a 71 parts truck that im getting ready to pull out. Problem is I can't get it out of gear. I can't get the shifter to budge at all.

Im a little bummed because I really wanted this trans in my truck.

Is the clutch linkage still in the truck, or are you just trying to pop it out of gear without being able to step on the clutch? If so, perhaps you need to push the donor truck forward or backward 1/8th of a turn of the tires to get the trans gears to loosen up in the backlash. Did you try popping the t-case into neutral?

Sounds like it is stuck between gears. Had one in my old truck that would get stuck in reverse. Had to pull the shifter out and take a big screwdriver to line everything back up inside.

Would there be a permanent fix for it?

Roughly 10 years ago my 465 got stuck in gear because it got low enough on fluid (worn 10 spline adapter sleeve). Filled it up and let it roll around a little, good as new

Make sure there is fluid in it, don't force it too much (because you can bend shift forks etc, they are far from fragile but don't kick them or use pry bars :D) and try to spin the motor or driveshaft even with the trans in neutral. Worst case is some worn dog teeth which means a rebuild with a few new gears or a different trans (either of which are relatively inexpensive).

Motor doesn't run and im not sure of the co.dition of anything. Pretty sure its stuck in first too. I'll give it a shot tomorrow or thursday.

stuck in gear

I had an issue with mine several years ago out wheeling with some friends and down shifted and then would not shift at all messed with it a little then it shifted fine for a few days and it did it again and would not come out of second gear at all.

So I pulled it out and found that in the shift fork assembly there is three rails that have springs and detent balls. One of the springs had broke and wedged itself under the pedestal and the shaft locking it up.

Pull the top cover and check it you will know right away.try and shift it off the tranny this will also let you get a good look in side it.
