I've just finished swapping in a 465/208 combo in my 79k20. The problem is my 465 will not shift into low or 1st. 2 3 and reverse work just fine, but I have nothing else. I am thinking that something inside the trans moved around when I had the top off.

Anyone know what I should be looking for?

you didn't get a fork lined up on a syncro slide ring .

hate to say it but cover back off. friend did it on reverse and had to drop it again for him . sad part was less than 500 miles later we swaped in a nv4500. :haha:

I'm gonna cry IRL. That thing was a pain to get off and put on.

I'm about at my wits end. Had the top off and on about 5 times each with a similar result, no low or 1st. It LOOKS like everything is lined up right

Would you guys tell me what you think? Also, which cluster is low-1st and 2nd-3rd?

Ok this question seems like its way below your given skill level but Im gonna ask anyway. You are aware that low/1st gear is not synchronized and requires you letting the clutch out slowly to shift into it right?

Rev 1st is on the bottom to the side, that is how much I remember.
Can't remember left or right.

Do you mean low and first or just the first available forward gear? I have neither low or first but 2 3 and reverse work. I can't even move the shifter into position for either of those

Have you had the shifter itself out? With the shifter out, use a big screwdriver to center all the blocks, re-install the shifter, move it halfway into reverse and re-install the cover.

No only granny low is un syncd. 1st gear or true second what ever you want to call it is syncrod and should go right in as long as your travelling slow enough.

side note :

its a 4 speed people . 1-2-3-4

quit calling its a 3 speed with granny gear .

first forward gear is 1st . we don't care what the shifter knob says .

This is why I suggest pulling the shifter out and centering the blocks.

This is just plain not true.

It is a four speed, but the gears are Low-1-2-3

No different than the 9 speed in out semi. Top gear in it is eighth . . . . .

As to your problem, I would assume it is with the shifter, or the shift rails. Can you shift it into Low or First with a screwdriver with the shifter out, but the cover on?

I can not

hehe I hate to say it but I agree with Martin (don't take that the wrong way Martin!).

I call it a 3 spd with a granny gear mostly because for normal driving L is less than useless. I WISH it was a 4 spd! Maybe I'd be able to make it up a hill without dropping 30kmh...

Oh, it is definitely a four speed. It just doesn't have a fourth gear.
