i've got a tekonsha envoy brake controller and an 18ft dual axle trailer with brakes on rear axle. the truck was wired up with the controller before i bought it. i bought the truck from a buddy and his trailer brakes worked fine. the trailer has a 6 pin connector that plugs into an adaptor and then into the truck. i have all the lights working on the trailer perfectly. the green light works on the controller with the trailer hooked up. as soon as i hit the brakes the light dims to almost a pink color. i took the wire from the trailer that powers the brakes, i believe it is blue and used my test light to ground. when i do that the light turns red, like the controller is working. if i take a wire and go directly to ground in same spot as test light, i only get pink light and no brakes. What is going on with this thing? thanks for any help you can give.

i checked all the grounds. it seems the trailer i have has been wired over and over. i don't know how i got the lights to work in the first place. i did look at my adaptor and it says that there is a battery wire (black wire) in the socket on the truck. should this wire be hot? i can't get power from it. with a test light i checked rt and lt turn, stop, tail, and they all light up with my test light but there is no constant hot wire? should there be a hot wire back there? i am going to buy a new wiring harness tomorrow with lights and wire the whole thing right. all the light kits i have found are only for the 4 wire plug and no trailer brake. can i just run a wire directly where it says electric brakes at back of truck directly to the wheel for the brakes? thanks for all the help. i hate wiring:(

you guys are awesome, i can't believe how fast you replied. i am going to replace all lights and wires tomorrow and try that. i've got a big wheeling trip this saturday. it gets dark so early now i know i'll be towing in the dark. i'm towing my rig with my 92 suburban. last time i towed on the trailer the trailer brakes didn't work and i hit the brakes and barely stopped in time. i don't want to take any chances this time.

i rewired the whole trailer with new lights. all lights work and trailer brakes:D. i even added some new running lights. i can't thank you guys enough for helping me. this site is awesome. can't wait to take my truck out this weekend and show the jeeps what my fullsize can do.

be sure to take a good strap so you can pull them out when they get stuck, it's what we have to do around here.
