wanted to know what steering columns are interchangeable for my 89 k5
I elimaneted the possibilty of the starter. so it has to be in the column and was advised that repairing can be difficult to just get one from the junk yard

There is nothing in the column that will affect the starting per se. The rack and pinion of the key can go bad, but its fairly easy to fix.
If its working, then the ignition switch is what does the turning on of the starter, and its mounted on the top of the column below the dash.
And the safety switch if its an automatic is mounted on the column too.

Probably you could change out all three easier than replacing the whole column.
