years ago oru built a 1955 1956 1957 chevy prerunner truck for one of the owners friends i need pics of this truck it was sea foam green or what ever the light green color was on those trucks it had a 3 link up front with a cantilever steering set up on it any help would be appreciated a close friend is building a 3 linked 65 burb and needs to see some steering setups on it

the front axle has 18 inches of travel. it is a 3 link, this burb is a overbuilt the owner has a 86 cj with 4 link and loved 3 wheel turns and with this burb there is to much suspension movement for crossover if he pulls a wheel and has to hit the brakes its going to take a hard left turn and im trying to avoid that. i wish my computer didnt crash i had the pics on it from when i saw the truck in person

I'm assuming it's a triangulated three link with no track bar. If that's the case then no matter what kind of linkage you have bumpsteer will make it undrivable at any speed over 20 mph. You'll need to go full hydraulic or run a track bar the same length and angle as your drag link.

Maybe KTMOUTFRONT will chime in here, he has a lot more experience than I with this exact situation.

ive driven the 55-57 that im talking about at prarie city ohv park it handled perfectly thru the whoops at 65-70 mph it was really impressive i know it can be done i guess ill have to get out the auto cad

what you are calling canitlever might be somthing esle to others. i know a swing type system is used alot.

there is a system used on some trophy trucks that employs a saginaw box that actuates a linkage setup, kinda likea bell crank setup, but havent seen it used in a live axle setup.

was this truck you speak of in a magazine at all?

OK. I will jump in. Mine is a triangulated 3 link. Tried crossover because that is what was on it with the track bar set up that broke. Could not drive it over 15 mph. Went HOWE full hyrdo. A hand full on the street. A blast in the dirt. My other option was the cantilever steering set up. This one runs from the box in line with the spindle arm to line up with the radius arm pivot point then runs to the steering arm on the spindle. I did not have the room due to the 2.5" coilovers and the 3" triple bypass shocks. I am going to a 3 link with a track bar and crossover steering to be able to drive it on the street.

Action shot here.

not that i know of it belonged to a dairy farmer in central california i for the life of me cant remember his name but the truck was all forms of badness super clean factory color with all oem chrome and a prerunner fronty bumper and a prerunner rear bumper

yea its all new guys with no old project pics or details i called them first i think i got it taken care of ill get pics when it gets figured out

Well, since I saw that truck in person at a car show in Chico CA, but took no pics, perhaps a written description of the steering linkage on it will do?

I would not call it "cantilever steering." It was simply a push-pull system with a twist. The box was under the pedals and the first draglink ran towards the rear of the truck to a single lever 'bellcrank'. Just below that was the second draglink, which ran forward to the LF knuckle.

The twist was that the second drag link was nearly the same length as the lower control arm and ran nearly parallel to it. The reason that it was not exactly the same length or exactly parallel to the lower link was that being a 3/4 link system to do so would have put the rest of the linkage in crazy places.

The linkage axle mounting points have to be placed relative to the pivot on the steering arm, and the rear of the 2nd draglink has to be placed relative to the linkage's frame pivot points if bumpsteer is to be taken out of the equation.

Oh yeah, the steering input shaft from the wheel was crazy. Several u-joints and I think that there was one industrial 90* drive bevel gearbox in it!

i have a couple of pics, but just of the truck driving.. i'll try to scan em tomr.
