School me!

It's been over 15 years since I purchased one, I'm wanting it got my 76 k5 so I want the same feature I've seen on Jeeps that goes off if someone sticks their hand in..what is a good brand name? and What should I expect to pay?. No PW or PD's so it should be pretty simple, a paging option would be nice but not if it's pricey.

Discuss:D

DEI is probably the best on the market, but Compustar and Auto Page are also good. Auto Page is the cheaper of the three. You can get a proximity sensor for just about any alarm. If think they are about $60. Alarms can range in price from About $90 to $250 for ones with the 2-way paging system. Just depends on what features you need.

DEI is some of the best with great customer service and warranty! :thumb: I like the Viper Models personally.

You would have to add a proximity sensor, but i've really liked my Audiovox. Never thought much of the company, until i bought this burb with a basic one....and it never gave me any trouble. Purchased a remote start/alarm from them for the blazer, then one for the burb. The price is definitely right, just add teh sensor you need. Remote start always sounded like a novelty to me, but i love it now that i have it.

Do you have power doors and windows to go with it?

I do, but you could easily hookup the system and not use the door locks.

Hell, when i got the burb, i thought it was just some POS system cause no one ever hooked up the door lock harness.

If you do have power locks though, adding keyless entry rocks. It made my truck seem so much newer and less crappy :haha:

All the emenities of a newer truck but on a better body style :D. I used to have the Viper 791xv installed first on my 99 S-10 pickup and then swapped into my 85 K5 when I got that. Hooked up some actuators to the door locks for power locks. Also had remote start and alarm with a siren in the engine compartment and inside that cab (loud as hell for anyone sitting in there). I had a proximity sensor in mine as well and a shock sensor so if you came near it when the doors or top was off it would give you a warning beep and then go full alarm.

That system works up to a mile IIRC and also pages your keyless entry fob when the alarm is triggered. They changed the model I guess from looking at their site but this is basically the same one I had: http://www.viper.com/P-5702V/Viper+...de+Sst+2-way+Security+And+Remote+Start+System

I also used to install mobile audio/video and alarm systems so if yo uneed any help shoot me a PM.

how hard are these to install? Is it worth paying someone and will a place install whatever I buy seems like prices in the car audio shops are alot higher than online:rolleyes:

if you are handy with 12v electronics, its doable. The remote start part adds a bunch more wires. Personally, i did it once, and swore i'd never do it again. But for $75 to DIY and probably 200+ to get it done, i couldn't justify the money to pay someone to do it. I was replacing a similar alarm, had installed this exact system before, and it took me about 8 hrs. I did a great job with all the connectinos, and heat shrunk everything......but still. Took forever. Plan to spend the better party of a day/weekend under your dash to accomplish it. But its up there with working under my sink and working in crawl places on the list of favorite tasks.....

I think if you buy one from Best Buy the install price is included in the alarm price. It definitely does take a while though. Anywhere from 3-8 hours depending on how much you need to hook up.
