alright need some opinions.

looking to move out soon and plan to put as much money in the bank as i can. im gonna sale my 2006 civic and put that in the bank. im looking at picking up a 96 corolla that needs alittle work. i gotta see what it needs but lets say i need to drop another motor in there. should i jump on it? i would probably rebuild the tranny while in there so it mechanical sound.

so my question is should i get it and try to fix it and be in the car for only $1500? worst case scenario i either rebuild the motor or get another motor.

my plan is to have this for gas mileage and either get my k5 running or pick up a cheap k5 as a truck to haul stuff. lets hear some opinions

If you need a car for DD, I wouldnt buy one that needs work and sorry but motor and tranny dont constitute "A Little Work" I guess it depends on how cheap you can get parts and how skilled you are at imports.

Something like that could nickle dime you to death and/or be unrealiable.

Whats wrong with the honda? just trying to get out of payments? Cant blame you if that is the case.

1500 for a corolla that needs work is also NOT cheap. there are way better deals out there.

oh no i can pick this car up for next to nothing. and put 1500 into it depending on whats wrong with it. i havent looked yet but the tranny ran good last time it was driven.

as far as the honda, nothing is wrong with it, its payed for. i just would like to sale it and take the money and put that in the bank to buy a house here down the road

having a dependable car is very important. If the Honda is payed for I say keep it. You won't have to worry about the nickel and dime thing at all.

Just live like a monk for 6 months or so and sock away money there. You can save quite a bit if you don't go for coffee, don't buy candybars, don't buy sodas, no extras and live cheap, no going out to eat, etc.

I think having a dependable car is something that is important.

this is true also. im saving up everything i can right now

Yeah if its paid for I'd keep the honda. The difference between cars will disappoint you anyway. Plus dont look for a house that is PERFECT. Look for one that needs a little like siding, newer cabinets, stuff like that. They will go cheap and theat stuff is all cheap and easy to do if you know how to use tools. I've done all mine and have next to nothing in it compared to the increased value on my place. then youll have equity and a nice place.

That's exactly my plan. Plan is to own a few rental houses so when I retire I'll still have income.

Idk ive found some nice deals on cars. Idk what your trying to get for your civic, but my brother just found an old lady with a 98 Lumina, 80000 miles for 2 grand, thing is rust free, fricken drives great, super compfy, power everything 28 mpg. My ex bought an 01 Cavalier Z24 with the 2.4L 4cyl, now theirs a fun car, and it still gets about 30mpg, had 100000 on it, no rust, runs great $3000. Little more but its like the sporty edition with the cooler wheels and low pro tires.

Just saying IDK what you mean by a "cheap" fixer or what not, but you could sell your civic im sure for a good amount and get something like one of these and be fine. I did breaks on the cavalier for like $80. THat was it. But that lumina man, may be an ugly thing, but man its a nice ride. Like a boat with big cushy seats lol.

my "idea" would be to pick it up for a couple hundred, slap a motor out of another car in good shape and go with it. just something to get back and forth to work. i would like to get 12000 for the civic.

i need to get another truck or get the k5 running for hauling stuff around once im moved out. also need to tote my kayaks around.

im just looking for different ideas right now. each once sounds good so keep it up guys:thumb:

I also bought a GMC G2500 Vandura when i was 16 for $1000. Used to be a plumbing van. Red, had 148000 with a tbi 350, man that thing is the best invesment i ever made, blacked out the alloy rims on it and the mirrors and grill, put a new oil pan in. Thing runs great, awesome for hauling anything, especially beds, and couches for moving. Gets 18-19 Highway, cooper cobras, I love it. I hauled scrap from work last year (furnaces, air cond condensor coils....) Made $800 in scrap over the summer so its almost payed itself off, havnt spent a dime otherwise except cap rotor, and a nice deck and some wally mart special speakers. I would honestly look for one, find them cheap, no seats or anything in the back, rear end howls like a beast but i just crank the radio, my mechanic said the gears look soo good he said it would outlast everything else. (the bearings like to eat the housing a little for some reason in vans, had one at work with 10000 miles do it, if you find it quick it can be fixed other wise its no big deal). Check Craigs list man, best investment, and pretty cool lookin thing, got a few pics of it on my blazer thread below.

If you are trying to save up money and are willing to live on the cheap:
I was looking for $200-300 cars that ran good but not necessarily looked great, I would buy them, drive them to the ground, Usually a couple of years, only change oil, once something big happened I would take it to pick n pull, get $100 for it and then find another one.
It worked for 8 years 4 cars.
Now I have a jetta that gets me 35mpg and I traded it for chevy truck that I couldn't sell for $600.
The guy is happy with the truck, I am happy with the jetta.
It runs great, paint is faded, interior is clean, but missing the center console. Has a leak in the power steering which I will fix, I got the seals for $50.
Engine runs great and passed smog with flying colors, Manual tranny shifts smooth.
Now it could use some better tires, had it for a year so now it's OK to buy tires.:thumb:
As for the Civic, if you get 12k for it, you are my hero.:dunno:

yea 12k is alot but i guess its going to depend on what gas does. i turned down offers of 10500 so im in no hurry to sale it

List the honda for 13000 or partial trade. See what they offer you. If someone offers a 2-3k car that you like tell em the car and 10.5k, they may take it. You'll be amazed what some people will trade. You may end up with a better car than you thought and 10k. Like you said, you dont have to sell it right away, so you have time to see what someone will offer.

this is a good idea! ideally i would get a cheap car just for work, then find a cheap k5 or truck just to haul stuff around and stuff for work.

The van man!!! cant go wrong!!! Plus you can fit a full size mattress in it if ya know what i mean...

ha im not sure about a van. a k5 with a top off cruising the beach is:woot:

Not saying to replace the K5, i thought you needed something so you could finish the K5 to move out. Van would allow you to use that to move out and save up money to fix the K5. And Van+Girls+Beach+Mattres+umm Van=. lol. I swear to god you would think it would throw chicks away, but they freekin love it haha.

Thats actually how I found my ex wife. She loved my hair and my van.:D
and yeah i though you had a k5 that you could fix.
