Ok, i just aquired a 400 small block:D and sm465:D from a friend last night at a texas holdem game(yes i know, here come the redneck jokes). The motor/tranny is out of a 79 blazer. it was last running about a week ago and had a rebiuld about 3000 miles ago. The carb didn't come with it. now i looked all over the place and can't seem to find a solid answer. What carb should i run? or can i just throw on the tbi intake out of my 89 and run that? other than an extended knowledge of the skinny pedal, air/fuel delivery is not a strong point of mine. and since i got this in a card game i have extra cash to put into the carb.

Any help would be awsome!

Awsome! I say if the engine is still stock and you plan on keeping it stock, go for a Holley 650cfm 4160 carb. Or if you planon offroading more, then I say go for the Holley truck avenger 670cfm.

Remember though, Holley carbs are not bolt on and go like the box says, they require a good amount of fine tuning, but you get the most power with a Holley.

I ran a 600 on my 400 for awhile, ran awesome. Also had a TBI on a 406 that I built, than ran even better. Plan on doing another one.

You can take the TBI intake an elongate the center holes and put it on the older style heads. Change the sensors and should be go to go.

cam specs? intended usage? if stock your tbi may be ok, but you will have to get an aftermarket intake, to match old style manifold bolts(center bolts at dif angle) w/tbi mounting base, or put your heads on 400 block, possibly some richer injectors...i.e more lbs per hour

You don't have to do use the TBI heads. If you "open up" the center bolt holes it will work fine. I had the this on my old truck, ran good and no problems. You don't have to get injectors either. If it's a high RPM, them yes, but stock or mild they will be fine.

The TBI 406 that I built had an Xtrme Energy 268, stock everything else, and ran with no problems.

First thanks for the replies. Most of my questions here go un-answered so i m stuck use a J*** forum to ask about any truck problems.

The truck i would put this into will see very little street time. I will mainly use the truck on jeep trails but would like to keep it street legal so i can tow my YJ. i think i am gonna try the tbi on the 400 cause i had to many problems with the holly carbs in the past. Do i need to modify any thing else other than a hole in the floor? And b454rat what sensors do i have to change?

I didn't change any sensors. Either got new ones or used the ones off the motor. Whatever year the TBI is, get the sensors for that year. IIRC the only sensors that go in the block is the knock sensor, and one in the head for temp. Course, it's been aboot 5-6 years since I did it, so probly forgot some stuff. But once you start the swap, it's easy to see what goes where...

Well, considering the motor came with a quadrabog, I'd say thats a good choice..

No offense to the Holley fans here, but I'll take a Rochester any day of the week over a Holley for anything under 500 hp...

considering you only have 5 other posts outside this thread, I find that highly unlikely... This is bar none, the best, most helpful forum on the web...

Not directed at you, but more a statement in general, if people would actually contribute, as opposed to just coming around and using us to help them with their probs, it would be even better...

I had a different screen name but I forgot my password first and then, because I had to move, I lost my internet for awhile (bout 3yrs). So I was unable to even look at the site. For being 20 and working about 60-70hr weeks for the last couple of years the fact that I know more than cell phones(my job) is quite amazing (to me at least). So I would love to help out CK5 more but being a Chevy guy in a Jeep environment, it’s kinda hard. But thanks for the input, I’ll try to add my two cents where applicable. And I agree that this is thee best site for anything fullsize, but having a guy with a Jeep is nice to have around so you just don't hear echoes constantly.

hole in floor?

aww, for tranny, yea yea....u still have to deal with the center bolts on each side of the intake manifold, the bolts changed angles,...if seen people enlongate the holes as suggesested, but i've also seen some of these people have trouble with water sealing problems too....i would either get a 4bl to tbi adapter or just get an edelbrock intake for the older heads with tbi base and swap, instead of hogging out the holes on a stock tbi intake to fit older heads, if go either, remember teflon tread sealant on intake bolts...every1 goes thru to the water jackets!

I have a 600cfm edelbrock on my 400 too and it also runs great and has for a long time with the performer intake.
