It's been 20 years since I've done this. Back then I bought a 5 gallon can of carb cleaner to soak & clean before rebuilt. This stuff stunk up the entire garage and then I had I had no other use for the stuff. Is there something new & better today? What do you use?

Woo hoo! - First post after being on here for a few years.

I just rebuilt the carb on my tractor. Used Gumout Fuel Injector/Carb Cleaner. Almost no smell and it worked great. Local NAPA had it on sale for $1/bottle - grabbed myself a case. Its normally $2.50 I think, which is still reasonable.

The tractor carb was smaller, only took about 2 bottles. I would imagine a "normal" carb would be about 5.

The spray cans (Carb and Choke Cleaner) also work better than any starter fluid you can buy.

I've always used lacquer thinner, and after use, pour back into the cans for use later.

Yeah, last time I did it I used paint thinner in a pan, works really good. I don't like anything for parts cleaning that I can't keep in a pan or what not, so I can soak the pieces and brush them off.

Engine cleaner and what not seems to work ok, but you go through it so fast, and it's so expensive, to me it makes more sense to use paint or lacquer thinner, and then re-use it.
