I am at a decision making time hear on picking a carb and I need some input and help. I currently have the stock 86 q-jet with the electro-doohickey that is supposed to help on cold starts, and well it doesn't. The carb is in need of a rebuild anyway but seems to perform okay. I also have an 85 q-jet that needs a rebuild, but without the electro-doohickey. I have also been looking at one of the Edelbrock Performer 600cfm with electric choke.

Now I know that the q-jet is supposed at least somewhat better for economy purposes, but just curious how much of a difference there is? I don't see much offroad use other than just dirt roads so the offcamber issue, well isn't one for me.

I just can't decide if I should try to rebuild what I have (shaft bushings needed on both) or buy the new shiny one that I shouldn't have to worry about other than just tuning. I am told it should be close to ready to run out of the box. Please help me decide. Not looking to start another my carbs better war just need some honest first hand experiences.

If you can find an Edelbrock Q-jet, that's the route I'd go. The standard Edel's aren't bad carbs, but on a truck (even one that doesn't see much dirt) I prefer the Q-jet. A reman'd Q-jet would work too, but those tend to be hit and miss depending on where you get them.

It all boils down to preference. I have an Edelbrock Q-jet on my truck, and I am more than pleased with it. I've run standard Edlebrock carbs, too, but I think they're better left for street only vehicles. I want my truck to handle whatever I throw at it, even if it doesn't go offroad very often. I've been bombing down a flat, rutted, tree lined path at night in a truck with a standard Edelbrock, and when it quit running on us we almost totalled the truck (no steering or brakes). That was enough for me. :eek1:  :yikes:

If I were you, I'd grab the Doug Roe Q-jet book and a rebuild kit, and rebuild the non computer Q-jet you have. If that doesn't work, then buy whatever you want.

Got that book and it is very good. I know the q-jet is a great all around carb, just wondering if it is worth the trouble to do the bushings and rebuild versus buying a new Edelbrock. I guess I could always consider one of the JET or SMI q-jets as well.

For the cost of the Edelbrock, why not just go to Summit and pick up a newly rebuilt Q-jet for 300? For my money the Q-jet is one of the best carbs I have dealt with. Edelbrock Q-jet, Rochester Q-jet either way they are great carbs.
