Carb to MPFI....

AFR heads are Air Flow Research heads. I have heard many good things about them but they are a little more expensive then most other heads, but I hear they are good.

Keep your eyes on the Edelbrock "performer" al heads. Cheap, and supposedly JUST re-designed. Apparently the previous performer heads weren't very impressive, but if they have changed for the better, then they are probably $800/pair, vs $1250 for AFR's.

You've gotta worry about the intake bolt pattern (there are 3) but I *think* the performers are at least dual patterned.

The Vortec TPI base is the only thing around for "stock" runners, and is $400 available ONLY from www.sdpc2000.com

Thanks for the info, but I think I'm just gonna go ahead and buy the MPFI conversion kit from Edelbrock if I go that route. The kit is about $930 and seems well worth it, being that it will just bolt on without any modifications to the heads.

I guess I'm opinionated, but I think not changing heads for that kind of money is a little pricey.

I guess if you can be into it, all said and done for $930 (I kind of doubt it, fuel pump, fuel lines, etc all included?) it's not too bad of a deal, but if you buy a stock '85 or 86 TPI setup, it will bolt to the stock early heads too with no mods, and $500 is the going rate for a complete TPI setup.

as I'm finding out...$500.00 is just the start...The fuel pump in the tank of the camero not gonna work in the tank of the blazer....hence, $300.00 for new fuel pump. The fuel lines have to hold lotsa pressure, and I just cant see putting in 15 year old lines, hence $150.00 to Earls plumbing for new lines and fittings. I swiped the ducting off the camero and the boxes for air intake that hookd over the cameros radiator, but that has to be modified to God only knows where....all in all, $500.00 gonna turn into $1000.00 pretty quickly. Also, if anyone can help, Where can I put the two boxes for the air induction???????? /forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif

Well, you can run an inline fuel pump, which is considerably cheaper, or so I thought. You don't really have to run the in-tank, just a bit easier if you are already TBI, which some are. You *can* run the stock camaro TPI pump in the TBI tank though.

Most of the truck lines are steel (TBI or not) and whats not steel is braided flex hose. I'm using old ones on my truck. I guess it is kinda risky, but if GM felt it was ok, and would last, who am I to second guess something that has so far not shown to be a concern? Besides, injection needs high pressure, how would the Edelbrock system change that requirement?

For my air induction, I think what I'll end up doing is mounting the air filter where the evap cannister was if it will work, have the air induction in the drivers side air inlet, and then run it to the TB. I'm sure that it will take some creativity.

<font color="blue">What truck is your tank from? I have a stock camaro fuel pump in an 87 K5 tank in place of the stock TBI pump, fit right on the sending unit with no modications. And it was $80 new, where you got $300 from I dont know but you should shop somewhere else /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

For the fuel lines, I got a roll of 3/8" aluminum from Summit for $20, then I got some fuel line repair peices from the parts store ($24 for both) to connect the fuel rails to my new lines. The return is low pressure (4 or 5 psi) so you can use 5/16" rubber for that. I think I have about $50 in my fuel lines, and it took me just over an hour to connect my tank to the fuel rails. You do NOT need to spend $150!

As for the air induction, you can get an elbow to hold the mass air sensor and attatch a cone K&amp;N to. Go to thirdgen.org and search for "cold air intake" to get some ideas

I think what he was getting at with $300 is the cost for a new TBI sending unit if you don't have one or can't find one used.

My fuel tank got changed out to a older style pre TBI 31 gallon....so unless I change my fuel tank to 86 / 87 plus, I've got to run with a external fuel pump and a matcing send unit...sorry for any confusion. /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif

<font color="blue">Mabye the 87+ sender would fit in your older tank? Worth a shot. Try the yards for sending units, I got a 31 gallon tank with sending unit and a good pump for $75 last spring.

As I see it, running external pump or internal isn't going to make a bit of difference with the baffles in the tank missing. If the fuel sloshes enough and the pump goes dry, the vehicle dies, period.

People here have run without the baffled tank and TBI or TPI, so its not that it won't work like that, it's just "optimal" to run a baffled tanks. Stock 87-91 tanks are *garbage* in regards to the baffles, so the only reason to buy one is for a sending unit. Of course if the baffles are still good (rare) then the tank is a bonus. You can buy brand new baffled tanks for about $130.
